I gave up on that level as well, I couldn't figure out what exactly the puzzle was. Seems like it might have just been about perfect timing or maybe some weird quirk of the game like being able to input while the screen is black.
To complete that one it is a combination of pixel perfect jumps and a quick restart so the map is a little behind their usual pace.
