Just curious, what do you change about the car's physics when the space bar is pressed?

The car controller is actually just an invisible physics ball that rolls around. And the car model positions is set to the balls center position. When space is pressed you can’t accelerate much anymore, but you turn faster and there is less friction on the ball.

Thanks for the reply, that makes a lot of sense.  I was thinking about making a drifting game for a while :)
