I would like to do that as well, and I also had another problem that if you drop an item in the grass you can't pick it up again.
If you cut down the grass and then go to try to pick up the item really fast it might work
I didnt seem to have any problem in V5 picking up any boards or gears inside the grass, trees however still hide tools very well.
