Click twice on the confirm button on the first screen. First click is to make the game recognize that the mouse is in the game or UI. You don't need a controller to play the game.

So, another problem. When it gets to that screen, I can't see my cursor at all. No matter how many times I click, nothing happens, so I'm wondering if there's a way to fix that.

Never experienced that before. Try to hit ALT+Enter to toggle fullscreen and see if the cursor appears.
