I'm sorry you're having trouble getting it to work! I'm reading that the Z key is mapped to W on your keyboard, as you suggest. There is not really an animation for eating in the game, but you should hear a peck sound effect (if you're on top of a patch of worms), and you'd also see your hunger bar dropping.
