Are the red ships firing randomly immediately when they spawned or do they start firing when you're in range? I had the feeling they spawned outside my screen and I got fired at out from nowhere...
The red ships will start firing 1 second after they have spawned. That could mean that they are way off the screen and firing at you. However the projectiles only have a limited lifetime from when they began to where they end up.
