I kind of envisioned it as something that'd be mandated for a scavenging mission amongst a band of mercenaries. Especially once the Captain was separated and people started dying. A live log would be a bit more trustworthy rather than just relying on testimony after the fact. These logs would essentially serve as her defence if anyone went back to the TAO ship and started asking questions about why two of her crewmates died from gunshot wounds matching her weapon.

That's also why she stopped recording the log after being fired on while attempting to go back to her ship-- she only adds the last passage two days later before sending out a distress signal.

It's something I thought a lot while writing to avoid potholes but I didn't directly mention in story due to word count.
