Honestly this might be a preference thing as I absolutely love the comedy in this game. I don't think the game is supposed to be taken too seriously.
I'd say the bigger problem is updates take too long and there's too much reworking being done. I just end up being able to play it once every say half year for a bit. Feels the plot not moving much is more because of the weird and slow update/rework schedule than anything else.
