Such a neat mechanic that I wish I had thought of it! If you keep the mouse controls in going forward, I might see if you can get it to follow a bit quicker (and it may benefit you to add some sort of change to the mouse cursor if you keep the black and white color scheme, cause mine got lost a lot). But I see you're gonna keep working on it, so I'm excited to see where it goes!
