Things I liked:
-Controls were cool and precise and felt good
-I love collectables, so a motivation to explore which is cool
-the variety in level design and enemies
-music
-story at the beginning with the cutscene - super cool!!
Things to improve:
-My screen was set to a different resolution so I did not see the controls on screen or the counters at the top of the screen so I ran into a few difficulties with the second jump of the game until I realized I could double jump (Just need to make sure UI text is visible for other screen resolutions. Luckily I just switched over to a different screen and found the UI(
-Hitboxes of enemies and spiked was big and unforgiving, creating some frustrating moments. I saw one time that I lost 2 lives from a single enemy when I passed over the top of it, not even touching it. When I did get hit, I could still move around, but then I would later get teleported back to the start which was confusing
-I am sure you are aware, but sound effects and visual effects are huge for player feedback. Let me know that I picked up a coin and the counter going up is for coins. Let me know that I got hit or completed a level
Overall:
you may think you were in over your hand for your first game jam, but I think this is an awesome way to learn and grow. You understand the development process condensed down into a few days time and now you have a game that you created all on your own- that is incredible! You did awesome and this game was fun, be proud of what you did in a short amount of time and keep it up!
Lastly, if you get a chance, it would be awesome if you could play and give feedback to my game!
