Hmm. That's odd. If you're on a Windows PC you could try the executable (or try the WebGL version if that's the version you haven't tried). Sounds like the intro screen and pause mode are out of sync. There's no need to press RESTART unless you're stuck, just space should clear the intro (game runs in the background to begin with).
