If I browse games in general, I mostly get crappy lo-fi horror games, not gay visual novels. I only get a lot of gay visual novels if I deliberately search using the "visual novel" tag, and even then the LGBT+ visual novels don't really crowd out the non-LGBT+ visual novels. There's a lot of stuff there that I'd like to filter out, but it's all different stuff that I'd like to filter out for different reasons.

Filtering for only completed games is actually possible. From the home page, click on "Directory" at the bottom of the screen, then choose "Released" from the "Release Status" category.

This seems like you're trying to debate that the site isn't flooded with gay games when the number of tags say otherwise. All while agreeing with the point that you should be able to easily filter for what you don't want . Regardless this doesn't answer the question of alternative indie game sites and I didn't make this post to debate.

I'm not trying to start an argument, I'm just honestly baffled by your statement that itch.io is overrun by gay visual novels. The way I see it, one of the following must be true:

You are being triggered by gay visual novels to the point where it seems to you that gay visual novels dominate on itch even when they really only make up a small percentage of the games.
You are searching using tags or keywords that show an unusually high number of gay visual novels.
Itch is for some reason showing you a lot more gay visual than it shows me for the same tags.

...and I'd kind of like to know which one of these it is, because it affects what kind of help we can give you.

I don't think anybody here disagrees with your statement that filtering on itch is bad. The same can be said about just about every other platform, to a greater or lesser degree. Filtering is a hard problem to solve. If it were easy, then itch would have already solved it.

Anyway, it's possible that you would like GOG, if you haven't already tried it. Unlike Steam and itch, it's heavily curated, so fewer indie games, but what games there are tend to be higher quality on average. Also, very few gay visual novels, although there may be a few.
