Life or Death

by Moonwriter's Tale

Hey there Moonwriter's Tale, thanks for submitting a project to the 2022 IGMC. I'm Drifty and I was asked to judge your game in round one of the IGMC 2022 game jam. Here's some feedback about your project.

Starting out I got a little Rakuen vibe from this game. I find it interesting how you changed the text display and pacing of the game.

The translation into English is a bit rough and while you can sort of understand the meaning, it's hard to read because of the way that it's worded.

I like the combination of PIXI filters and the customized tileset. A little filtering can go a long way. The attention to lighting is also appreciated.

The first time that I encountered the four dark death dealers they quickly surrounded me and I was unable to do anything but get hit ten times and immediately die, only to be met with a force game-close that required the game to be relaunched.

Maybe it's because I am playing with a controller?

I like the meta data storage. Relaunching the game remembers that I died, but what's the point of using the crystal ball to save if the game just deletes all the save data?

The next time I tried with the keyboard, I was unable to get passed the first set of four enemies. They immediately bum rushed me into the entrance, hit me ten times, while I frantically hit all the buttons on the keyboard. I died and the game closed again.

I tried to relaunch the game only to be met with a screen that says too bad you can't play because you died. Then it force closes the game again.

I'm confused and at a loss as to what made you decide to make a game that won't allow the players to continue to play.

Thanks for submitting a project to the IGMC 2022. I also noticed you submitted this same project to three other game jams.

Good luck on your placements there as well.

Thank you for playing my game, but you got the worst ending, known as "DEATH" (In which the main character is permanently dead). There are three endings in the game depending on its gameplay. (None is good, one is bad, and two is the worst. These are death counts.)

I know my grammars were pretty bad because English is not my native language (In reality, I'm Filipino), but I deeply appreciated you about my ideas like meta-data anti-cheat and permadeath systems inspired by RM2003 version OneShot, and Flash drama One Chance. So, I'm using MV to focus on its system for game jams without self-programming.

Also, the torch item was inspired by yours from YouTube which I found. (Sorry I forgot to credit it as "Special Thanks".)
