The coruption, drug, and mind break are worrying to me... Will they be optional, or will we have to go through them in order to get the ending?

The harem route is only unlocked after getting all the bad endings of each character that's why It is a darker take on the storyline of each character in the game and you'll have to do it in order, yes. But if you don't enjoy it, just play the normal route, the harem route is totally optional and secret too.
