Thank you for making the game! Gamedev is a cool thing to do. Please don’t my comments as criticism.

A recorded a video of my playing this game: https://youtu.be/IUUp-m9D_m4

I tried to provide some feedback there. I’ll copy some of the key points here as well.

Some random thoughts on the game:

  • The gun as it is doesn’t seem to be too useful for an average player

  • If gun stays timed, I would like to see how much time do I have. It’s bad when I’m about to shoot, but it’s out of juice already, so I die instead. :D

  • If the gun becomes unlimited by the time, add a ammo display. I think it could make the player more motivated to collect multiple gun pickups.

  • You can add a gun upgrades pickups, make gun fire multiple projectiles at the same time.

  • The initial platforms go away so fast. They feel underused, since you’ve implemented them, but they don’t contribute pretty much anything to the game in my opinion.

  • …so maybe add a platform building bonus?

  • What about a slow motion (time) device (1 time use, equiped like a gun) or pickup?

  • Some music would make the game feel more alive. Check this out: http://dig.ccmixter.org/dig You can find a music track with some liberal license, like CC.

  • I haven’t found any reasons to jump. Am I missing something?

  • The game page has a cute spaceship picture. :3 I wish I could have it in the game!

I would play it a little bit more, but I was scared that it will crash everything due to the Wine issues. :D A native Linux binary would be sweet.

I could've sworn I replied to this already, but maybe it got lost in the business. Let me rewrite it c:

First of all, thank you so much for your response! I'm incredibly happy and excited to see so much feedback and your footage of you playing it. I coincidentally recognise a lot of the feedback that you have noted as things I was already planning on either adjusting or changing in similar ways as you suggest, so it's amazing to kind of get a confirmation on this.

Funnily enough, the game was supposed to become a kind of base defender game after the MVP was done for this game jam. This included stuff like a store to buy upgrades, limited shots for the guns and even being able to place new platforms and add turrets on top of them and such. So seeing all of this is amazing since a lot of it shares similarities with those ideas.

Sadly I wasn't able to add a lot of those things due to the time I had to develop it during November. I'm also still fairly new to Game development, with not a lot of projects under my belt, so coding it all out ends up taking a lot of time, especially when there's bugs or things aren't working.

The reason that the upper platforms were there was originally the bottom platform would be segmented and would get gaps as some of the platforms would get destroyed. This would create a somewhat multidimensional platform effect while dodging to add difficulty. But in the time I had I couldn't figure out a nice implementation of this. This would also explain why the jumping in it was there etc.

On top of that, I also loved the spaceship, and wanted to have it float underneath the base platform (with the idea that you're defending the spaceship, therefore, space defenders), but that will happen I'm sure if I ever continue on the development of this little game. I admit I loved stepping into a more arcade style game as I loved the simplicity of the idea's while having it be potentially infinite with very little game mechanics.

In any case, thank you so much for the feedback and for playing the game! I massively appreciate it!
