guys, i'm confused because when i try to upgrade equipment i can't, no matter what i do
You need to select the weapon you want, then use materials to level it up.
Only metals, essences (not all are compatible) and ability crystals are valid upgrade materials.
i figured it out, i had to select the weapon that had the white background as opposed to pressing e, lmao i am stupid
