I realized the Pirates of the Caribbean parallel after I had already finished most of my music... but you absolutely nailed the Kingdom Hearts inspiration! The music for Traverse Town was an inspiration for the whole story and had very heavy musical influences on Where the Star Kids Sing. And regarding music theory, I really enjoy having a language we can use to convey all the intricate tools we use and experiment with as composers.
