That definitely shouldn't be happening! Do you know if you maybe don't have much free space on your machine? If that isn't an issue, you can try changing the graphics options in-game by holding down SHIFT + G when the game first loads. From the "Graphics Acceleration" menu that appears, choose the renderer to use, then exit and restart the game.
