I too got tricked by the existence of the two seperate-but-similar books "Lua Reference Manual" and "Programming in Lua"!

My god it's full of stars. Thank you! I'd run across this before but it never comes up in searches so it just slipped right on out of my brain.

it's too bad that it does not use LuaJIT for playdate as the speed is quite a bit better. 

I hope that this does not fully put you off exporting Lua in other places, it's really a nice language.
