how to edit staging

Place the parts of the rocket you want as stages.
Click the button in the bottom right that says "Stage Mode". Stages work from 0 to 5, 0 staging first and 5 staging last.
After clicking on the given number, click on the parts you want on that stage. The part should then turn a different color.
When done building, launch. Press space to activate the next stage. Remember, 0 to 5.

ah, thanks! i appear to be having problems setting certain parts as stages, as when i click the object, it doesn't change colors, i'll try the scratch version

hm, that's a bit odd. seems to be working fine for me. I mean it could be a lag related bug, but to be fair the more gray a part is the harder it is to see the color change. let me know if you find anything out. thanks!
