It shouldn’t.

Like, technically no one using Koikatsu to make games has a license to use it, it’s just that Illusion never bothered to go after anyone.

And since most of the stuff usable in KK is community stuff, that will remain the same.

There is an unlikely scenario where it could affect everyone using KK… Let’s just hope it doesn’t come to that.

It's not that they "never bothered"; it's that they publicly went on record saying that they approved of indie developers using their assets. They just have no legal licensing avenue set up, as it wasn't worth their time to hire the lawyers to draft it and the staff to process the licensing requests.

FAKKU (the western publisher of the first Honey Select, a relatively early Illusionsoft game) attempted to take the solo developer of Harem Hotel to court a couple years back for use of unlicensed assets and the case would have gone through - and been won by FAKKU - if Illusionsoft themselves hadn't stepped in and told FAKKU to knock it off. This was, in fact, the inciting incident that made Illusionsoft step away from third party publishers in the west and market their games directly themselves through Steam.

So the answer to Poco's question is:  hopefully not. But it depends entirely on who - if anyone - picks up Illusionsoft's IP after they shutter their doors. If nobody does, or if they get picked up by a company with the same attitude as Illusionsoft, then all is well.

But if the IP is swallowed up by a company like FAKKU... well, fingers crossed.

Worst case scenario, I will rebuild CK with brand new assets. The story will be told! Let's just hope it doesn't come to that :P

Didn’t know the bit about them actually being okay with it.

I mean, considering they’re japanaese and apparently their copyright laws are part of the reason why companies like Nintendo are how they are.

Welp, shit, now it sucks even more that they’re gone.

Did know about the FAKKU thing, didn’t see fit to include it in a shorter reply.

And yes, the somewhat unlikely scenario is that. The remains getting vored by some company that’s as much of an ass as FAKKU.

Possibly worse… Imagine it’s Nintendo… C&D left and right.

Thank you for the explanation, I was really worried about games that uses illusionsoft as a base for their game models. Let's hope for the best.
