I don't want to be a 5-year old, but gently saying, this game is SET to win, and not because of it's mechanics, but because it's just aesthetic in a way, that feels not "Scratch-like".

Because recently (probs from 2018 or something) there's a rise of games/projects in scratch that have cool mechanics and stuff, but they miss what's the best in those games - the aesthetic.

"set to win"

This isn't "being a 5-year-old" anymore, this is being arrogant.

Okay, TEMPORARILY ignoring that, firstly, I enjoyed Apocalypsis more BECAUSE it feels Scratch-like and not the opposite. Scratch games being Scratch-like is kind of the point of Scratch itself. If you want to make less Scratch-like games, learn other languages that, y'know, AREN'T SCRATCH. C# Unity is a good starting point if you know the basics of C++ or Java, for example.

On the contrary, this game tries to be less Scratch-like without trying to add any extra details on how it would be less Scratch-like. It doesn't have any outstanding features that differentiate it from other Scratch top-down shooters. In addition, it incorporates features very badly and is awkward to play; for example, the title screen is literally just some moving text and pictures, the gameplay is bland and predictable, the actions are hard to use and control, etc etc.

As for my personal opinions, this game is on the worse side of the spectrum; the sprites look like they're screenshotted from YouTube, there is absolutely no story or replayability, the controls are very janky (why is create turret and open skill tree, some of the most used controls other than moving and shooting, 2 whole keys away from each other?), and the game feels very cramped in general, with no room to dodge attacks and counterattack at the same time. Without taking into account the other things you have said to other people throughout the jam, I gave your gameplay 1-2 stars at best.

But now what if we take into account what you said to the other people that are participating in this jam?

You've said some hurtful things in the past to many of the jams participants while trying (emphasis on trying) to be passive-aggressive, but what you end up saying could be very hurtful to them. Sure, their games look like something you could fish out of a trash can down at the local Home Depot, but keep in mind that this is a SCRATCH game jam, not an actual one, so there are bound to be little Timmies making their first Scratch game and publishing it to the world.

If you REALLY want to criticize others this badly, I suggest you go to itch.io/jams and join an actual game jam with people that can create spectacular games with ACTUAL programming languages and not just block-based ones. Scratch is a community for children, and even though Cocrea might not be, it is still based on Scratch, which means that there are bound to be children in the community, so give them a break. Why try to get them to quit game dev entirely with their first game they want to show to the world just because you can make a better looking piece of "art" that's "better" than theirs? Arrogance doesn't help things, and never will.

Oh, and, as a final note: the "game" that you've been working so hard on?

It's missing a required extension, CanvasEffects.js, so it's literally unplayable for the time being.

hell naw, bro starts a war)

  1. Scratch-like is good, but not for me. My game might feel like a couple screenshots, but comparing it to MS Paint costumes, it's better. From 2018 (probs) there's now a trend of just making zero quality games with no passion but "with EPIC mechanics!!!1";
  2. Scratch is an IDE, a programming language. It's a tool, not a color. It might have a culture, but I believe it's very childish. I want to move from it and show that you don't have to suck before others suck, as nowadays, games on Scratch feel repetitive;
  3. Also, I know about the bug. My problem ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
    I fixed it, and I hope you'll check the game out again;
  4. Yes there is no story. This is not the point.
    If there's a game like Quake DM, a simple arcade shooter with no lore - are you going to scream with your mouth "THERE IS NO LORE!!"
    Games are art, and art is made to make you feel the emotions that the creator wanted. It's not a fairy tale.
    Lore is a good instrument for "transferring" that emotion, it's not obligatory for every game.
    Lemme show ya an example: Redmatch 2. It's a bit popular game with no art style, no lore, NOTHING. But it's still popular and beloved between different gamers;
  5. Because Scratch is a kids programming language, it doesn't means that you can't make good games in it. There were millions of great aesthetic games made by countess creators. Scratch is not limited just to children. If there were only those "little timmie's first games" in this jam, and mine one... what would the judge choose? "Don't die"? I respect every creator, every child in this jam, but if you're going to make some random kid's game the winner instead of, for example, "Normal Day", this is not a serious jam.

tahnks for shout outing my game so cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ((normal day refnrec)

okay first of all thank you for taking the time to reply to my rant

second of all it's 9pm and i don't have time to read all of this so i'll update you tmrw

"Update you tommorow"... but instead you proceed to roast me like a complete hypocrite on Discord:

Yes, I was maybe "too rough" or something, but this is itch.io, not a place for "little timmie's first games". It's literally said in the second ToS chapter of itch.io. Yes, I regret saying some of my stuff, and I love games like Dragon's Fury or Normal Game, but you say Wastelands 4 is the better?

That's what I think is sad about this jam - most of the devs come from Scratch, and probably don't even know how to make a game good, maybe even how to just make a game. They seriously can't even take criticism, and go and cry about it somewhere in the discord server, like these guys:

ok but did you score higher than my crappost of a game :sunglasses:

also i forgor

if you want me to write it now i can but it's 11:46pm

also:

1. i wasnt lying when i said you are toxic like "they can't even take criticism" buddy this is a scratch mod ofc there are going to be ppl from scratch, if they cant take "helpful" criticism that's their problem not yours

2. i wasnt trying to "roast" you, i was stating a fact that you were calling everyone inferior (and you didnt even beat the "cringe" game wastelands 4 🤯)

3. these screenshots are almost a month old lmao you're the one taking forever cuz savaua probably gave you these a long time ago (i got mod in the server after sgj6 so the name should be yellow and not purple)

4. i forgor

ok thats it my mom gonna yell at me for staying up late so have a nice day ig

happens

yea sorry for being unfunny homie😭😭😭😭

  1. yea, i'm often kinda toxic, but well no one has to expect the internet to be nice. like no way, the scratch community is mostly 8 or something, which is literally against the tos of itch.io💀
  2. i was kinda cringe, but still no way, "he shits on everyone" is a cringe fact ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ also about wastelands 4, i rember how you explained hla, like "the enemies are too predictable" and "the game is not replayable", but it literally fully explains wastlands 4💀 (skip this section for no wastelands 4 roasting, NOW!) like literally, the game is boring af and runs like at 2 fps on a computer that runs hl2 or portal 2 with ease, the goofy ass monsters are stupid af and just go left forever, the art looks like shit, the music is unbearable, the menu looks like it was made by an 8 year old (which i'll repeat, is fucking against the itch.io's ToS), and the character select screen is literally the only "cool" feature. and guess what? this goofy ass game got to the 20th out of 64 place. how?💀
  3. yea, but still why bruh💀
  4. 🤝

happens😥😢😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
