I actually kinda like this puzzle idea where each 'wrong' move you make moves you further away from the goal. It could be some scientist sprained his ankle so he lazily makes clones of himself to move around and leap frog over. It's going to be a bit hard to explain the cross mechanic though, and I think a lot of people won't immediately get it because it seems to be a mechanic that came from nowhere.

yeah i get what you mean and i wish i made it more clear. i planned on having more position-based abilities/features but this was the only one that i had to implement. if i continue working on it i'll make sure the mechanics will make more sense on their own.
