You don't need to download .net at all, you can directly download and install any version of .net from within protontricks itself.

I think I'm in the correct prefix and i'm trying to install dotnetdesktop7 (the most recent package available), the install wizard comes up two times and says the installation was successful, but I'm still getting the prompt to download missing files when I try to run the exe in proton 8. I'm sure someone will put out a step by step guide soon, but could you let me know if I'm close?

Try switching to GE-Proton 25. Thats what I used and Im playing it right now off my Deck

Did you still need to use protontricks to add .net to the prefix? I've installed GE-Proton 25 but I'm getting the same installer message as before

Try dotnetdesktop6, that worked for me. Turns out it needs version 6.

Don't run the game fullscreen in Desktop mode though, there's no way to quit  😅

yep, ended up figuring out the same things you did! the only thing now is that i can’t seem to get it to run again after closing it. need to delete the prefix and reinstall .net each time.
