Wow, I didn’t expect that… Could you tell me on which Operating System you are playing the game (Windows, MacOS, Linux…)?

Also the controls for keyboard are:

Z accept X cancel

W or Up Key > Move Up S or Down Key > Move Down A or Left Key > Move Left D or Right Key > Move Right

So make sure you pressed “Z” while you’re selecting “New Game / Start” Option! I hope this could help you!
