The letter "x" in the 8x8 sample looks a bit out of place. Maybe the letter is too fat?
The current shape works okay for a multiplication sign (×, ×).
The whole thing is written on .NET. The mac thing runs on Mono, which is also available on Linux. You might have a bit of luck just downloading the mac version and using mono to run the exe.
Or just use wine. It works perfectly with wine.
