i so want to get this but i feel like i have to keep hold of my cash until i can get a job again

edit: bought it, might make a yt series if my internet can function at acceptable speeds for five minutes!!!

This has been an ongoing issue for months at the very least. I’m trying to get Proton to run it somehow but the binary appears to simply refuse to launch when I try it - but someone on Reddit had better luck than me.

Having the same issue here on Manjaro Linux. This issue existed in version 0.3.0 as well, but it showed a grey screen instead. Someone suggested that the issue was an improperly positioned camera in Unity, but I’m not entirely sure. The developer said he was going to take a look at it back then though. So hopefully this will be fixed soon.

Am programmer (but I don’t work on The Bibites) and you’ve got a decent idea of how easy these things would be to program relative to each other. I’ll just give my notes on the first three suggestions though, to make sure this isn’t too long.

Adding a tool that lets you click on food to remove it, or click on the floor to add food, would be extremely easy. Would probably just involve adding a button to the GUI (and/or a keybind) which causes the mouse to delete any food objects if present, or create food if not present.

Walls would be a bit more complicated than that, but only a bit - adding a tool that lets you click on one point, then on another, and create a wall. If you wanted to make it really flexible, you could have it accept any arbitrary amount of points so long as there are at least two. You would then have code to create an object between each pair of points that collides with Bibites and prevents plant spawning.

Temperature would likely require implementing a procedural map generator, since right now the map is basically the same each generation save for randomized plant spawning.

Not sure how #1 would be implemented - everything needs a gene attached to it and anything controllable needs output neurons, so if Bibites could gain and lose these dynamic parts there would need to be something in place to handle Bibites having different amounts of output neurons.

#13 could be implemented by splitting the map into quadrants - Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest. Then, depending on what quadrant a Bibite is in and what border is being crossed, the Bibite could basically be teleported. Going off the east edge would put you on the west edge, and vice versa. Going off the north edge will put you back on the north edge but in the other direction, and same for the south edge.

I don’t quite understand what you mean with #5 - is this, like, egg merging?

Not entirely sure how it expects me to share this lot, but here’s a Pastebin link.

Experiencing the same issue on Linux here.

this looks awesome

I wish I submitted something, but last month was hectic. Also I couldn’t down-scope the concept to something I could actually make and I simply don’t have the art skills necessary to make the game look how I imagined it in my head.

I guess Vampire XCOM will have to wait till next time.

Probably should have mentioned that I’m on Linux and I don’t know if Alt+F4 works outside of Windows, but I just clicked outside of the game window to bring up my XFCE panel and right clicked on the game and clicked close in the menu that popped up. And if you do put in a proper quit command that’d be great.

(also, god dang it this game is just a-gets pummeled for potential spoilers)

uhh….. how do I quit the game????

That makes sense. I have a book on how to make pixel art, so I’ll probably try to make some pixel art. I think the main trouble will be trying to make a tile set and character sprites.

How do I art? While programming is something I’m quite good at, drawing things is not something I consider to be a strength. However, I don’t just want to make a text adventure or the like because I already have an idea I quite like. It does need some form of art and I don’t really know how to make it. It’s like, I have an idea of what the game would look like in my head but I don’t know how to turn that into graphics? If that makes sense?

Ideas: how do I get them?

Seriously, I’m having trouble coming up with ideas. What’s a good methodology for coming up with game ideas?

I’m mainly familiar with Bloodlines 1 and the LA by Night series by Geek & Sundry.

This sounds interesting. You dip your toes too deep into the water and the shark catches ya…

A Malkavian as an unreliable narrator. That sounds so freaking interesting. And potentially hilarious.

Touche.

I’m decent at programming, my main worries are just the visuals and audio. Even though I know I can just use free assets. Maybe I should team with someone? But, I don’t think I’d be able to keep that up. Eh, I’ll figure it out.

That’s entirely fair. And hey, this jam lasts a whole month. I won’t be crunched for time like I would be in Ludum Dare. I’ll have time to figure out what I’m actually capable of when it comes to game dev, and whether my ideas work.

So far, I do! Even if I have no idea what I’m doing!

I’m definitely interested in this, but it starts tomorrow and I have no time to refine my skills to the point where I would feel confident actually making a game for this jam. But I still think joining would be interesting.

As for what kind of game? Maybe a rougelike? I’m not entirely sure.

Edit: have a game idea, basically XCOM like gameplay but Vampires.

aesprite randomly disappeared from my laptop so I’m checking this out.

I would stream but my internet is quite terrible.

I don’t have a single musical bone in my body. My little sister does though, and this is going to annoy her until I figure out how to music.

Seems interesting.

thx

I feel like hexagonal tiles would be great for what I'm working on, but... how do I even make a hexagonal tileset??

In a previous topic (that I deleted cause it is no longer necessary), I asked if there were any people who knew how to work with graphics and was directed towards the Godot game engine. Now, I am asking if there are any artists willing to work with me. Because my art, for lack of a better term, looks like something a toddler could make. And I'm 17 years old.

To be specific, this is going to be a 2D game. I don't feel like dealing with the hassle of the third dimension.

I hadn't considered putting up a reward when creating this. Even if I wanted to, I wouldn't be able to due to my family's current financial situation (some people just repo'd my dad's truck). I also didn't realize I should have put that information up with the jam listing. This is the first jam I've hosted after all. I will be adding that information.

Just opened up the DystopiJam page and found "A Brexit Simulator". much controversy. wow.

EDIT 1: To the person that made the game: Didn't expect such a controversial subject to pop up here. Then again, I'm here going to great lengths to predict World War III so :p

EDIT 2: Seems as if my work is cut out for me.

Yeah. Got an email saying it should be listed.

That looks awesome. Just saying.

Now to find the Contact Us button

(1 edit)

Sounds... interesting. Looking forward to see how it turns out.

True. How do we get on there though? ... maybe the Contact Us button :)

... is it just me or do we need more people in this jam? Honestly, 3 people isn't a lot.

This seems like it will be an awesome toolset to use. Let us "refine" our games with refinery.

To all game developers who wish to submit to DystopiJam: I am happy to have you here. A game jam can't exist without people submitting games. Now, onto the nitty gritty. As you all know, your task is to develop a game that places the player in a dystopian or post-apocalyptic scenario which they must either survive or fight (a.k.a if the scenario is that aliens took over Earth and made it worse than communism, fighting it would be overthrowing the aliens). According to Google search (yes, I'm giving you information from Google), a dystopia is "an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one." According to Merriam-Webster, it is "an imaginary place where people lead dehumanized and often fearful lives." According to Wikipedia, it is "a community or society that is undesirable or frightening." I'd pile up more definitions but I would bore you. As for creating the actual game, remember that your game will be rated based on the quality of the gameplay and how well the different gameplay mechanics and the genre fit together with the scenario. You will want to think about this carefully. I may also add rating criteria for innovation, something I love to see. That's all for now. I'll make another thread when it's time to vote.
