Can't really say much since I never used Butano. If you choosing the engine, stick to something that advertises itself as an engine. What I used was just a tutorial with a simple open source demo, I built upon this and called this CFA Engine for fun's sake

CFA engine is what came out of this tutorial. It's not an official name. I thought it would be fun to name it like this. CFA stands for Contra Force Advance - this is what tutorial covers

As temporary solution, go to Vitashell and make this folder: ux0:data/hitemballs/

If this still doesn't help, make an empty file in this folder called "savegame.dat". Sorry for the inconvenience!

Hm, that's odd, never happened to me. Are you playing on PS Vita 1000 or 2000 and do you insert left or right burger first?
I think I know what may cause the issue.

Hey! I didn't tested it on Linux. AFAIK, it should be possible to be run on Linux, but I don't know for sure. 
As for PSP, no, it's not possible to make a build for PSP, though it would have been cool to make such port. I used this tag because there was so few Vita games and I thought PSP users still will get interested in this project, if they have Vita.

Does your gamepad disconnects by itself or issue occurs only if you disconnect it intentionally?

It does support gamepad input, but it's not yet implemented in menus
