I tried using display_measure_all since I don't need the full extension but I could not get it to work. I then imported the display_screenshot extension and used 'display_capture_measure_all' and it worked. Just thought I'd let you know! :)

I found them! :)

Whose game?

It will never be complete.

Thank you!

Ah... That is a debug tool I used to make the levels. Forgot to remove it :K. Stick to the left mouse button!

Great to hear that! Thanks for the feedback :)

Thanks!

Great to hear that! Thanks :)

Sounds great! I'll try to be there.

Damn took me 53 tries. Very well made game! Good job.

Yea...

Marketing is ridiculously difficult. One thing you do need to realize is that marketing is not a thing you do like for an hour. You have to start doing it the moment you've got anything to show. Make people interested by creating interesting content about your game. I am personally doing Twitter and I am also struggling big time to get people excited about my game. Do make sure you don't focus on the wrong things though! Likes & follows don't mean much and don't convert well to sales. If you've got a steam page or a itch page try getting people to visit those through your various social media accounts. Track what actions lead to the most wishlists on steam or downloads on itch. Keep experimenting and find out what actions are the best.

Good luck!

Not yet. I expect to have a demo up in two to three weeks.

Hey there!

My name is Robin and I am developing a game titled: 'Open The Gates!'. I am struggling to figure out what genre my game falls under. Here is the pitch I would give:

'Open The Gates! is a 2D sidescrolling castle siege game where you build castles to defend yourself from the enemy sieges. During the game you gather resources to build a powerful army to destroy the opposing castle.'

The problem I am having is that I am unable to find games similar to mine. I can't imagine this idea is so unique no one has done it before?! Below are a few screenshots and here is a link to my twitter so you can check it out: https://twitter.com/crater_hater.

So if any of you could answer the following question that would be extremely helpful!

1. Name the genre this game belongs in.
2. Name as many things that are (in your opinion) similar to this game. These can be other games but they can also be movies or novels
3. Describe the art style.

Thank you so much!

Oh. I think you can look at twitter without having a twitter account. But anyways, I do not want to upload a game that has no content and isn't finished. I'll do a free demo a couple months before release.

I don't have it uploaded anywhere yet because it is far from done but if you want you can go to my Twitter page. https://twitter.com/crater_hater. I would really appreciate some feedback!

I found this rather interesting especially because I am in the midst of making my first public game and I am trying to pay a lot of attention to making my posts easy to access and visually interesting but I am struggling with maintaining interest from people. I know my game is still in the early development stages so it isn't strange people aren't super interested yet but I would like to know what makes you interested in a game that is being developed. Would you stick around / follow a Twitter account more quickly if you got to help make decisions using polls? Because that is something I am considering.

A game where your computer shuts down when you fail? That sounds both super interesting and extremely annoying. Not sure what to think of that. Make sure to properly inform the players that that is what the thing does because else they'll get super annoyed and think it's malware

An idea would be to make a .bat game where you have to actually take care of your pc like a digital pet. It has to sleep and get enough attention etc. Seems like a really interesting concept haha.

I really like the page as well. The first couple sentences really made me excited about the game seeing as I am a massive Harry Potter fan. Really good page and I wish you the best of luck!

I will! Keep going and I am sure we can see many more nice games from you :)

Good job finishing your first game. I don't have time to play the game right now but I can see from the screenshot that it is quite good! It definitely looks more polished then some other titles I have seen around. Keep going!

Update Wednesday April 1st:

Oh my. I think I have arrived at the middle portion of game development. Nothing feels like it makes any real difference. Here are a couple of things to show what I've been doing for the last few weeks:

Then I spend around five hours trying to get them to target walls correctly. They still catch fire but I managed to eventually sort that out and replaced it with some different effects.

I'll keep posting here every now and then! If you want to follow the development more closely please consider following my Twitter account at: https://twitter.com/crater_hater. Thanks!

I made my first game in a video editing program called 'Studio 9'. It uses the arrow keys to cycle between images in the video and it had the ability to create menus. Using these two things I created a "legend of zelda" type game but way way worse. I made over 10000 images in paint for it and the gameplay ended up being over 10 hours. I sadly lost the project but it was really cool to work on.

Hey,

Thanks for that! I will send you an email so we can discuss what I am looking for.

Open The Gates!

Hey everyone. Thank you for taking the time to read my devlog for my indie game titled: 'Open The Gates!'. I will try to keep the devlog as short and as to the point as possible. If you find this interesting please consider following this page as I will be updating it every other day. So, let's get started. What is this game in short?

Elevator Pitch:
Open The Gates! is a side scrolling siege game where players build magnificent castles in various levels spread throughout five charming worlds. The objective is to destroy the enemy who settled on the far right side of the map. The game is about sieging the enemy and fending off enemy sieges with slightly wacky troops and structures.

Devlog 1

Start of Project until 21st of March.

A lot has already been finished on the development of this game. Because it is so much I will show some snippets of the work I have already done on the game.

Structures
In order to produce units and gain resources the player has to build houses, barracks, archery ranges etc. The structure construction system has been completed and includes a scaffolding animation. This is what a structure looks like when it is being build:

Units
Wow this was a tricky one. I had this interesting idea for how the units would stand next to one another. Instead of forming a sort of queue they would interlock with each other in order to create more dense armies. The idea was simple but the execution was ridiculously complex and so this took me way over a week to implement.  This is what it looks like right now:

User Interface
For the User Interface I decided to go quite simple and easy to understand. There are four main 'resource types' in the game. These are: Wood, Stone, Food and Population. The first two are gathered from natural resources and food can be harvested from farms. Population is acquired by building houses. Population is required to build units, food to sustain them and wood and stone are building materials. Here is a quick video showing the User Interface.

Furthermore I have also been working on the attacking systems for both the ranged and melee units. Next up is the most exciting part of the entire game. Sieges! The enemy will build armies and intelligently launch assaults on your castle. Stay tuned to this post to see more updates!

Thanks!
