Hi, no worries at all!
So one way to think about it is the Academy is a time for the characters to get to know each other better, and to start showing their character traits.
Even if it's not spending time in a school together, if they're playing sports against each other, it can also be a way to get to know each other. In sports anime, even rivals who don't go to the same school get to know each other by playing against each other, or scouting out another team together, or even just running into each other when they're buying equipment or meeting up with friends.
I'll use the JET FANG RUMBLE World Tendency and the normal Academy Situations as an example:
- A Test of Wits could be during a practice game, or when pilots from different teams are put on a TV game show as promotion
- A Team Competition obviously can be a league match, but could also be something like a soccer match (like in Eureka Seven lol) or even a cooking competition during a retreat
- A Formal Event or Dance can be an awards show (one of our playtests had this! Everyone dressed up and brought their cool mechs too) or a sponsor dinner
- Sneaking About could be going to scout another team or find out their new mech specs, or even just going on a secret date without being seen by reporters
- A Private Duel can be on the field during a match, or meeting up randomly at the arcade and playing a videogame (like Milia and Max in Macross)
- A Lively Meal could be a dinner with an ex-teammate that used to play for another team, or going to a street food festival
Hopefully this helps you with some ideas for Academy scenes, and please feel free to keep asking questions if anything is still unclear!
Thank you! I'm still in the proofing stage with the printer so I expect the physical copies to be available with retailers in January/February 2024 (depending how quickly international shipping goes over the holiday period). I'm working with SoulMuppet for the Kickstarter fulfillment so they should have copies after that's done, and I'm working to have it available through Indie Press Revolution, and I'll certainly make an announcement/update here as well when they're available :)
UPDATE: Thanks so much to Mashuu (@marshuumallow) for providing the Japanese translation for What Should We Have Tomorrow? If you have any questions about the translation in Japanese, please feel free to contact Mashuu via DM as I don't actually speak Japanese and won't be able to answer questions in Japanese.
Hey! Thanks for the question! My main inspirations are actually cooking manga like "What Did You Eat Yesterday?" (which this game pays homage to in the name) and "Sweetness and Lightning", and also from my own experiences since I'm the primary cook at home and I'm always thinking and planning what to cook throughout a week, chatting with my wife about her day and adjusting and shifting planned menus around based on how we're both feeling or what needs to get used up soon.
Masak-masak is definitely a part of Malaysian culture, and it's usually a lot more freeform, though my nephews do love looking through cookbooks and pretending to make the meals in them and following some sort of menu since the cookbooks are structured this way (mains, snacks, desserts, drinks etc). It's not dissimilar to "playing house" or just pretending to cook or clean or drive since that's what kids see adults doing :)
Physical copies are now available through Floating Chair's shop here: https://floatingchair.club/products/an-altogether-different-river :)
Hello! If you are based in the US, I am working with Floating Chair Club for US fulfillment so that's probably your best bet to get a physical copy later, as I will be sending them extra copies to cover any damaged/lost copies anyway, so look out for that. If you're based elsewhere, drop me a message or email and I'll let you know what I can do once I confirm fulfillment options where you are.
