It's definitely a rough model haha. I really should have added human teeth to it. Big missed opportunity.

Some more references: The enemy that shoots three projectiles had their face texture sourced from a painting of inferno, the screaming faces was a reference from either inferno or purgatory, I can't remember. The hands were a reference to a description giving in purgatory, the layers idea came from purgatory, or rather the idea to make the game purgatory came from my idea for the layers.

I was really hoping to add more references though! I have a full Google doc full of things I wanted to add from the divine comedy but they didn't make it in.

Thanks for the feedback! The thing you thought was a goatse reference was not. Most of the games art is inspired by Dante's poems, mostly pieces from the divine comedy. The thing you're referring to was taken from a piece that featured this guy

Very neat entry for the E1M1 jam! I didn't end up finding the pistol in my first playthrough, so it felt weird having so many hitscanning enemies thrown at me without a firearm for myself. Very fun music, nice SFX, and pleasant graphics with a satisfying enemy death effect. I found the ammo counter kind of awkward to read. The level design however seemed to flow well, I was able to find the exits without getting lost and always had something to shoot at. Well done! EDIT: I forgot to mention! The menu art was really cool as well

Each entity has its own health bar :) it was originally in the plans to have a health bar display over the robots, unfortunately we didn't have time to make it in. This probably would have helped clear that up. I agree with your feedback for sure. Thanks for taking the time to play the game!

Really awesome idea! I feel like the levels got a bit more redundant as they went on. But the core mechanic is super clever! This is super well-polished too for a game jam. But one thing, all this polish but I couldn't find a restart level button! I really like the idea though. Very well done.

https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2019/rate/461256 An FPS where you play as a singular bullet, load yourself into enemies to shoot once, clear each room and get to the end!

I really like the load-in effects! Pretty clever way to fit the theme as well! Kind of want some more levels! Honestly all you can hope for in a game jam game though! Well done!

The correlation to the theme was a bit weak.

Controls could definitely be tighter, drifting was definitely weird. Combat could be more fun if the enemies gave feedback that they were about to attack. And also give the player a dash they can use once in awhile, would have been a bit more engaging.

Don't underestimate sound as a feedback loop for your players!

Some general design tips;

  1. Scale the camera larger and increase your players field of view. Nothing is more frustrating than dying to a bullet you didn't have enough time to prepare for because you didn't see the enemy that shot the projectile
  2. Games are satisfying to play based off of feedback given to the player, you definitely have visual feedback down (which is impressive to say since the game is so simple in terms of graphic fidelity, you pulled this off really well) but you should focus on motion feedback (things like manipulating time during certain actions, camera shake, motion trails etc. ) and audio feedback. Humans have quite a few sensory sensitivities, see how many you can trigger (in a good way of course) while doing something you want to feel satisfying to the player
  3. One life is a cool concept to think about. It's really poor put into practice though. Lives in general are a poor way to add difficulty to a game. To make a game satisfyingly challenging avoid uses of artificially hiking the difficulty up i.e. lives. Lives can be used in a good way, but be very careful when designing around them.
  4. Add a quit button! First thing you need to do when making a main menu under a time crunch when players are going to be playing your game soon is make the start game button. Wrong! Always make a quit game button. While this isn't a terrible thing when making a game that's being played by tech savy people like devs, players will always be irritated by needing to hit alt+F4 or any other hacky way to close the game. It's so easy to forget to do so it's always a good thing to get done first.

I really hope to see some of your coming projects and see you grow in your programming skills! If you have any other projects you want feedback on or tips to help with, feel free to hit me up! I think you have lots of potential as a sprouting dev! Thanks for the submission!

Words cannot describe my facial expression figuring out what this game really was. I have never been more disappointed with as much joy in the same instance. I really cannot describe the feelings this invokes. Truly a piece of art.

I see! I think the game is kind of stretching the bounds of the theme still -which isn't bad in itself however- I can see how it would start out as an idea coming from the jam, but it definitely fits better as a standalone title than trying to adhere to a "only one" theme how I see it. But I do really like the game on it's own. I'll definitely play once the post-jam version is released! Really good work.

I've played quite a few games like this so far in the Jam, but so far I like this ones art the most! I think it could have benefited from maybe a small line pointing in the direction you're facing? It was a little difficult reading where you were going to head with the timing of everything being on the quicker side (which in of itself wasn't a bad thing, would have just been nice to have something balance this a little) Definitely a nice touch having the player just restart from their original position rather than restarting the level for this type of game.

Really interesting concept! Really interesting take on the theme. I think it would definitely benefit from making a bit more audio cues. Would be a really interesting game if it's expanded on!

Loved the art of the game! The controls were probably the weakest point. I also got stuck in a wall and I lost the shield and wasn't able to pick it up because it went off screen.

As it's been  mentioned before; one button to pick up a weapon would be a lot more intuitive. The movement seemed really sluggish, that may have been the point but it just made it a chore to grab weapons if they got too far apart from each other. I also have no idea what the sword did since every time I tried to use it it only worked once (I was probably using it wrong but I have no way of knowing that)

I really liked this take on only having one weapon though! It definitely would be fun to play with a more tight control system and refined gameplay loop. Well done overall!

I really was hoping for a bit more from the game once I beat the first level, I was pretty disappointed that there wasn't more content to sink my teeth into! But that should be a compliment! It's a super fun concept with lots of potential! I do think that it would be nice if you made it more mine-sweeper esque in the sense that it's completely up to trial and error as to how you perform. Adding blocks giving hints to what's next to you/how close you are to a wall to balance out a bit of RNG. I also didn't quite understand how it fit the theme of the Jam unfortunately. But it was a fun to try out!

Pretty sweet game! Really enjoyed the concept! I think it would definitely benefit from a manual button to swap layers like others have mentioned. I think it was a pretty fun idea and very original. Matched the theme super well! Some QoL improvements and you could have a super fun casual game here!

Definitely would have liked to have more time to put more difficulties in. We had a ton of fun making it though! Thanks so much for playing!

That's a fair point! Glad you enjoyed! If we had an extra day there's lots we could have done with that time. Thanks for playing!

Thanks for the advice! Definitely agree!

Thanks!

I really enjoyed the aesthetic of the game! Nice to pick up and play, creative take on the theme too! Only complaint is the controls on KBM. I can definitely see this being super fun on a gamepad, but it would be great if it was just as accessible to KBM users as well, I think this could be accomplished by mouse controls rather than using the keyboard. Good execution otherwise! Great job!

Thanks for the feedback! Level design definitely would be more intuitive if we had some more time to work on it :) lots of good advice here as well. Thanks for taking the time to play!

Good to know! Thanks for the feedback!

Thanks a ton! If we were to ever continue working on it we'd definitely develop more of a learning curve. Thanks again for playing!

Thanks! With more time we definitely would have aimed to make things a bit more refined :) We appreciate you taking the time to play!

Thank you so much for the kind words! We really appreciate it! We're glad you enjoyed the game.

Thanks a ton!

Our game is currently sitting at 11 ratings and lots of positive comments. It's an FPS where you're a singular bullet. You need to "load" yourself into enemies and you have one shot before needing to load again!

https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2019/rate/461256

We'd greatly appreciate feedback and if you took the time to leave a rating!

Thank you so much for everything you said! We greatly appreciate it! Improved bullet movement was in the pipeline, unfortunately due to time constraints we weren't able to implement it in time, all in the process of learning though!

Thanks for the kind words! Will definitely check your game out when I get home!

Thanks for taking the time to play our game! If we had more time we would have loved to invest more in both the difficulty curve, and like you pointed out the camera controls. Next time we'll try fit more polish in! Thanks a ton for the feedback!

We did an FPS where you have one shot, like a lot of people did. But ours has an interesting twist https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2019/rate/461256

We'd love if you gave ours a try and leave a rating! https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2019/rate/461256

I just turned 19, been making games forever though, figure you could make an exception?

https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2019/rate/461256

We got ourselves an FPS that we'd love if you took the time to rate it!

Another game called Oneshot. However ours plays significantly differently than the others. We'd love if you left a rating! https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2019/rate/461256

Our game is one of the many called "Oneshot" I haven't noticed any of the others taking the same spin on it as we did though! We'd love to hear some feedback too.https://itch.io/jam/gmtk-2019/rate/461256

Thank for the words! With more time we definitely would have liked to invest in a more crafted difficulty curve with some more polish and QoL improvements. We definitely appreciate your feedback! If you haven't already we would also love if you gave the game a rating!

Thanks for leaving your feedback! This game jam was a ton of fun to do! We figured that shooting being the largest part of the game, we should try make it as satisfying as possible! If you haven't already we'd greatly appreciate if you left a rating!

Thank you very much! We had a blast making it! We'd greatly appreciate if you left a rating if you haven't already!
