Thanks, I actually find coming up with ideas for games more stressful than coding and creating algorithms. But we are all different =)

It looks like a really cool idea!

Writing the story of a game is really hard and require a lot of time, at least for me. Looks like you are doing a good job with that though.

Good luck in the jam!

Swedish Card Games

It looks like I forgot to create a devlog in the beginning... Oh well better late than never.

I plan on making a simple card game for a bunch of games I have played in real life.

Found some nice open source assets for the cards and something that I use as a wooden table.

I really suck at making GUI's so I thought this would be a nice reason to practice it.  For this project I use Python 3 with tkinter(GUI) and PIL(Image processing). So far I managed to get the grid thingy to work with me a little.

My goals in this project are:

1. Create my first game without a engine, only using code and images.

2. Adding as many card games as possible until the jam is over.

3. Converting the game to run in a browser in  some way.

I have some experience in Python 3 before, quite new to tkinter and an ABSOLUTE beginner with PIL.

Wish me good luck!

Cool game, nice flow in it.

Great job on graphics, game design and innovation. It was a bit hard in the beginning before you learned the controls.

Hi and thank you for your feedback!

If you have time could you please tell me what it was that you did not like in the controls so I can do better in the future.

Thank you for rating us!

Really interesting, inovative and cool game.  It was a big challenge to play and quite difficult(nothing wrong with that).

Cool idea. Nice graphics and sound. A bit hard the firstt times I played it but I think that is quite normal when you never played it before :)

overall well done!

Thank you, nice to hear!

Thank you very much!

Yeah it is quite short. Unfortunally there was no time to make more levels during just one week.

Hi,

Very nice to hear that you liked the art. Thank you for your input on the movement/jumping thing as well. I will remember it the next time I make a game.

Hello there and thank you for your input!

About the controls, yeah I think it is. You are not the only one mentioning it.

Thank you for rating the game!

Hi,

Thank you for your input. I didn't think about the game being to hard while making it....I think this is the downside when playing it to much while being in the test-phase. ;-D

Thank you for rating it!

"make sure to add your teammates as contributors on your game so they can also rate games"

Is there a formal way or something? I have never collaborated with someone making games in a jam before so maybe a stupid question..

I'm currently working with two other persons for this jam but I dont know how to add them as contributors.

The End

Alright, so I tried the game on a few friend, apparently my musical ability is not the best, but not much to do about it now.

I tried to improve it slightly for the upload, but we will see how it goes.

Hi,

Not as much time for the game as I hoped for these last days. I have managed to fix:

1. adding some death-animation to the player

- I made some frames of a dying character. It does not look perfect but will have to do due to lack of time.

2. work on a game-over screen

- Basically, I just added a game-over-text to that dying character.

Here is how it looks like:

So what's left?

Well, now I think I am just going to look for bugs in the game and try to fix them, then I will submit it.

Hello,

yesterday I did not have time to work so much on the game.

I managed to make some background music with boscaceoil though: https://online.boscaceoil.net/#!/

Next thing I plan on doing is:

1. adding some death-animation to the player

2. work on a game-over screen

3. add some death-animation to the penguins

Hi again,

Just a small update on how its going so far.

1. add sound effects

- I managed to find sound effects for the gun, but I have not fixed any other soundeffects yet.

2. build some kind of road so the player knows where to walk

- I finished the road yesterday.

3. Fix a bug(bullets stack up when shooting at the building)

- This has been taken care of.

4. Have a look at player controls, probably make it possible to rotate while shooting and maybe even shoot with mouse, I will also include so that you can control the player with WASD.

- I included so that you can rotate while shooting and use the WASD-keys.

besides that:

- I added the helicopter

- I made a end-screen

Hi MindlessRuff,

This game looks nice. I think your story is good and the art is superb, did you do it yourself? My suggestion on how you can improve this game is:

Refining the enemy AI, breath mechanics:

1. The breath is not always pointing in the direction of the nose.

2. Another thing I noticed is that I did not die once the health reached zero, the health also displays negative numbers.

except that I cannot come up with any feedback, well done!

I posted my game in the feedback thread in this forum and got some valuable feedback. Now I intend to fix the issues and I plan on starting with:

1. add sound effects

2. build some kind of road so the player knows where to walk

3. Fix a bug(bullets stack up when shooting at the building)

4. Have a look at player controls, probably make it possible to rotate while shooting and maybe even shoot with mouse, I will also include so that you can control the player with WASD.

Hi Sonderful!

Hey, just played it. It took 12 seconds to go from pressing Launch in the itch.io app to the main menu appearing. Pressing play took me to the game instantly. My computer is not particularly high-spec or anything, so it doesn’t seem too bad. Curious to know what it’s loading, though. :

Thank you for telling me, I think my game might not use the most efficient way to do things. This is because I prioritize getting it done until the end of the jam, but if I get the time I will look into making it more efficient, even though it looks like it does not takes to long time to load for you. Thank you!

I enjoyed slaughtering the evil penguins, but I do wish I could shoot and move, or shoot and rotate. That would have made it a bit easier.

Thank you for this valuable feedback, I think because I have mostly made games by myself, and also maybe because I am not very experienced in making games it is really hard to make it enough difficult to be a challenge, but not to hard so the game feels impossible. It seems to need some balancing(you are not the only one giving me this kind of feedback).

Your world is pretty large, which is cool, but I didn’t have a good idea of where anything might be. I happened upon a couple of buildings, but purely by chance. When you get to the point of adding a helicopter, you might want to give some sort of point to where it is.

I will add some more details to the environment, and I was also thinking about creating some kind of road to get to the helicopter. Thank you for telling me.

Thank you very much for your valuable feedbak!

Hey there. I'm not sure if there is anything you can do on your end about this, but I was not able to run this game on any browser besides Google Chrome.

- Hmm..that is strange, if you don't mind telling me, what browsers did you try and what operative system do you use? Thanks for letting me know though, I want the game to be playable on most computers(mac/Linux/windows) so I am very glad you told me this.

That aside it was quite enjoyable! I would appreciate the ability to control the character in a more seamless manner, such as WASD for movement and the mouse to aim.

Thank you for this input, I will try it out.

Hello nbe1233!

I liked your game, and I feel that you could add sound, ie. gunshots, walking.

- Thank you for this, I will add this on my to-do-list :)

Also I noticed as I walked southward it seemed as though I was not moving.

- I agree now when I think about it. I think I will add a few more details to the environment, maybe a road or something so you can feel that the character is moving. Thank you!

I also noticed that as you fire towards the building you bullets pile up.

- I did not notice this until you told me. I will fix it up as soon as possible, thank you once again!

Hello butchland,

It's nice you also use godot, I like that engine.

AFAIK, there’s no need to control the pausing of the game when you minimize the window – it just does it automatically (at least it does in mine).

hmm...maybe I clicked somewhere by accident, I will try to look it up.

Hi butchland, I tried your game and it looks like a good idea. One thing that was a little hard in the beginning was to see the play button(It's just as white as the snow).

Game Title/URL: https://knubbilito.itch.io/antarctic , Antarctic - Top Down Shooter Game

Pitch/Information: The idea of this game is to escape from the icy island in a helicopter, but I have not finished that part yet, so far all you can do is kill penguins and die.

I'd like feedback on:  Any feedback is appreciated!

I need help on: If anyone knows how to automatic pause a game if the window is minimized(I use Godot-engine). Also I would like to know if it's a bit laggy in the beginning or if it's just me using an old computer(maybe 30 seconds into the game everything worked fine).

Hello again everybody,

since last post I have:

1. Written code and made some some frames when the penguin attacks the player.

2. Imported a health bar as a way of displaying both player and enemy health

I also had some time over so I:

3. Started out on a welcome screen.(I decided that the player will escape the icy landscape with a helicopter)

4. made a house

PS: If anyone wants to try it out already: https://knubbilito.itch.io/antarctic

Hello olstra!

Yes I did draw the graphics and thank you very much! To be frankly I think everything with graphics is kind of hard, I had to re-draw a couple of times until I felt confident enough to use it for a game. Thank you for your advice about the tutorials. I gave your devlog a look and I think it looks really nice! Looking forward to follow you.

This game looks cool and it's nice you managed to get it to work with android(I did not, maybe in the future ;P). It will be nice to see how it looks like in the end of the jam. I really like that you posted tutorials that you used as well. If I may ask even though it might be off topic, what kind of program do you use for the recording of the game?(I saw you used Linux and so do I)

(1 edit)

Hello,

My intention is to build a top down shooter game called Antarctica where you are supposed to kill the penguins and escape from the icy landscape in some way that I have not decided yet.

So far I have finished almost all the pixel-frames and code regarding the player.

The penguin can chase the player but it cannot attack or die yet.

I have started to test out landscapes(currently only white round pieces made with the spray-tool in GIMP put together).

Here is a screenshot:

And here is a picture of the player shooting at the penguin:

Now I plan to:

1. Write code and draw some frames when the penguin attacks the player.

2. Create some code for hit points and some way of displaying the health.

I'm a beginner in both Godot and gimp, so any feedback would be great.
