I wasn't sure what else to add to the game as the jam is almost over so I just decided to upload it. Play it here!

I haven't really done much over the past couple of days. Yesterday I accidentally deleted the entire step event/movement code for my player (which was very scary) but I managed to recover it from one of the backups Game Maker saved *phew*. Other than that, I didn't do much. I changed the location of the score counter and made it work again, and I added some text and inputs for the menu. I also started working on the game page for when I upload it.
Today I've been trying to work on getting the sprite to change direction when the player is facing a certain direction (for example if the player is facing right while peeing on the hydrant the sprite will face right, and if the player is facing left, the sprite will face left) but I just can't wrap my head around it. Nobody online seems to have a simple way to do it that also works for a side-scroller. Even when I try the "complicated" methods it doesn't seem to work. This issue is included in the two constant issues I can't seem to get around. The other being the human walking sprite cancelling out the movement. These are also the two things I need to consider this game a completed prototype.
Today I finally implemented interaction! You can pee on fire hydrants and get pet!
I find it's hard to see the dog over the hydrant so maybe I'll add an outline to the sprites? I'm worried it will look weird but we'll see. I still haven't figured out walking animations for the human. I'll figure it out someday.
Thanks for the kind comments everyone! I'm not used to participating in things or sharing my work, so it means a lot to me.
In regards to progress, I haven't made too much. A few days ago I spent almost all day trying to get the NPCs to animate while walking but the animation seems to cancel the movement for some reason? I've tried using a few different methods for both the movement and animation but I still have this problem, so today I think I'm going to move on to something else.
Other than that whole Incident™ I did do some small things like menu, sound effects, fixing the score to move with the camera, and player "animations". Below you can see some things I've added, as well as the animation issue.
They kinda look like they're doing some sick moves?????
Alright it's day 4 and I haven't done much yet due to life but here's a progress/to-do list:

Non-priority:
- Parallax

- Music
- Score
- Sound Effects
- Menu
- Other Dog Actions (Sniffing, Chasing? Fetch? we'll see)
Hi, I'm Ace. This is technically my second time participating in this jam, but hopefully my first time finishing a game!
Game Engine: Game Maker Studio. I have used game maker before (a long time ago), but I've never made a sidescroller or used code so we'll see how it goes!
Concept: Basically I just wanna make a chill sidescroller game about being a dog that does things such as Sniffing Things, Getting Pet, and Peeing On Things. I may include more features later if I can get the base stuff done quickly.

hi! im ace. i was in the first my first game jam but i couldn't complete my game due to lack of motivation and resources, but i have many more resources and a lot more time on my hands so i definitely plan to do better this year!
my favourite game of 2016 was definitely stardew valley. an incredibly inspiring and fun game. i'm usually more into indie games because they aren't afraid of trying something new and they have a lot of heart. i'm interested in telling stories and i'm hoping making games will be one way i can do so. i did a few classes at university about game development but they were very basic and i've forgotten most of it, so i'm pm starting fresh.
i'm passionate about diverse characters and being nice, and i hope my future projects reflect that. as someone who has participated before but didn't really "participate", i'd suggest at least checking the forums quite frequently, but also participating in the forums/discord chat if you can. it helps to motivate and reading about everyone else's projects really inspires me.
hey!!! i'm using stencyl and I'm trying to put a text box into my game. i followed the image here (under the example: text input section), but it doesn't mention anything about actually drawing the text on the screen. i've tried a few things, but anything remotely similar to code completely evades me,,,, also i added the userInput attribute but idk if i have to do anything with it other than put it in the code?
i also want the text to fade out when pressing the enter key but i've been searching through the events and can't find something that does that. maybe after i figure out how to draw the text it'll be easier to find?
thanks!
