Hello y'all! o/  I'm Magic Pumpkin :)
I just discovered this game jam yesterday while searching for somegame to program. Pleased to meet everyone :)
So I will start to work on my game project from tomorrow (Monday) on, which will leave me about three weeks to complete it. I'll share my progress here along the way.

I'm thinking of making a game in the console, which is my favorite type of games. It'll thus be simply ASCII graphics, even though I'm planning on including colors for an eerie ambiance. Runs natively on linux and mac, under windows you'll need a piece of software, for example cygwin, in order to make it work. (Will include a tutorial if I ever manage to finish a playable game ;))
I got the idea for some sort of platformer, with a light story involving a guy named Whispers. Not much yet, we'll see how it develops.

Many thanks go to Eevee for organizing this jam, I'm excited (sic!) to be part of it, and I'm looking forward to checking out your games!
Have a fun time everyone :)

August 8:

So this was fun :)

Life happened for me during the last days of this game jam, so I couldn't complete my game unfortunately. But I had a lot of fun, and programmed stuff I never did before.

I might finish this game in the near future still, since I feel I really developped a solid base. One thing I did underestimate though is the amount of dialog and scenery necessary for this type of game. It was were there was the most work, and also my ASCII art skills still need improvement...

Anyway, thank you for hosting this jam!

Day 3:

So far we have 2 scenes worth of dialog, and after some tweaking, I got the destination selection working:

You can now cycle through the stars displayed to pick where you want to go.

It doesn't seem like much, because I also had to program stuff behind the scenes yesterday to get this working.

Just like I was thinking, this project might be too ambitious, or the timeframe too short, to complete it. I still have to figure out a little story, write quite a few dialogs, implement other star maps, and create a proper story progression tree, before this prototype is complete. I hope I'll be able to make it in time...

Oh yeah, and the GitHub repo is https://github.com/tezzerethouston/Multiverse in case anyone is interested :)

Hello everyone! This will be my WIP thread, where I update you through the steps of developing my little sci-fi game during the Careerin Game Jam :)

I've started working on the game today, with very little insight of what I wanted to accomplish: I think I'm going for some kind of story-driven RPG happening in space. You, the main character, have taken control of a device that allows your mind to travel through multiple worlds. All good, except you remember nothing, not even where the machine, within which your body must be lying, is located. The game should follow your quest, across multiple universes and along a number of NPC, to remember who and where you are. Nakasha and Rebetta, the personae of the device's AI, are here to assist you through this challenge.

So far I have the basic design:

What you're looking at is a star field, where I want the player to be able to select worlds to travel to.  And the dialog box, that is to remain open throughout the whole game, where conversations with the NPC like the AI happen. What is missing is some interface for the multiverse travelling machine, that should enable the player to travel through different star fields.

So this is somewhat ambitious, I don't know if I'll manage to pull it off, but I'm having tons of fun writing the dialogs already :)

Hope you like it, don't hesitate to reply to this thread, and good luck on the game jam!

Who else thinks the Multiverse theme is great?!!

I hope I'll be able to join, I understand the jam runs for a week, that's also a bit short for me... We'll see!

If I do join, I'll most likely be programming a console-based game. What are you guys planning on? Any ideas yet? There are so many ways this theme could be utilized in a game :)

Yaaaaayy!!!!!

Growing plants! (is not fully done :( )

In any case, I had a lot of fun, and made more progress than I thought possible when I started. :D

This does show that making a game in the console with a lot of features is possible over a short period of time, even for a single person.

Tilling the ground is now a possibility!

Welcome to Springs Isle

Taking inventory!

(Haven't implemented the NPCs to talk to yet)

By the way, I'm open to suggestions. Won't admit I lack inspiration, but y'know, any input is always nice :)

Some more plants to cheer up the place --I know, in black and white, it's quite terrible.

Scary! What are you developing this on?

(2 edits)

Noo, it's glitched with these characters!

I don't assume anyone here knows how to handle wide characters with ncurses?

I'll have to go with this, at least for now...

Since I'm a programmer, I thought I'd make a console game. It'd run on Linux or Mac, sorry Windows users!

Moving around!!!

It might turn out as a Harvest Moon-like, I'm still unsure...

It were... cabbages. Fun, right.

And it evolves!

Now supports ASCII art! What could this be?

Anyone good with this type of art in here? Doodle me sth! :)

In the end the terminal looks good as well. I'll save the art for another one. Off to the last week!

Thank you

Some ugly props, because I'm supposed to get better at pixel art...

Sci-Fi Mania community · Created a new topic WIP

I picked my favorite game project for this jam. This is what it looks like right now. I am hoping to make good progress on it one way or the other!

On my side it says 11 days...

There are the devlogs, which is why I created the project. I am not familiar with this system, is it not how I should go about it? I didn't know how else to link it with the jam, and I don't know where it shows I even enrolled either. Maybe I should have created a wip thread here instead?

Enthusiasm.

After a first graphicsless prototype, a new mockup:

PS: Where is everyone?

Hi everyone!

First game jam in a while, I'm so excited!

I decided to also enter August's #1GameAMonth and the 8th96hjamwithrules for extra inspiration o/ So in addition to the dystopia theme, I chose:

August16 #1GAM: "LEVELUP" *full prompt here: https://soundcloud.com/1gam/1gam-keynote-levelup*

8th96hjamwithrules: theme: "Hunt", extra optional rules: "things are not what they seem", "use revolution to succeed" and "weapons aren't allowed"

Personal challenge: create a fully original fantasy world for the game

This should get me going even though I am soloing this! :D

"Hunter" is going to be a survival RPG with a scenario (no procedurally generated randomness) that takes place in a dystopian world where an utopia collapsed to give birth to a doomed dark world where savage mutant beasts force humans to survive in small fortified cities, hardly able to grow any food. 100 years ago, shady doctors discovered a way to give special powers to teens going through puberty, at the cost of their personality. Those who survive the treatment are the Hunters, the only ones able to face the beasts and counterbalance their ever growing number.

You are a newly transformed hunter. You barely remember anything about your previous life, and everyone seems to be scared of you. An officer told you you've got to hunt if you want to be able to sleep safely in the city. "We don' want no useless mouth to feed here!" --he said.

...or something like that, if you'll excuse my poor english skills. (feel warmly welcome to correct me if I am being grammatically incorrect anywhere)

So the hero you are will be able to travel in the wild, trying to kill a beast here and there (they're incredibly hard to kill, even for you) gather enough food to survive and not be kicked out of town where famine already roams. Will you eventually find out how to fight the beast invasion? Will you be able to defend what's left of humanity? Or will you not contain your nerves flayed by the transformation?

I will use a 24 color palette, probably a lot of green-rich greys and small sprites so that the amount of work needed for art is not too overwhelming.

I will use the LOVE2D lua game engine.

Please don't hesitate to tell me what you think! :DD

Cheers && glhf!!!

Oh, and I made a crappy mockup to judge the size of the sprites I need:
