i really like the idea of using real photos of a location and making them into a myst-like game. :)

i made it to room 5.16 (where the computers and guitars are) and couldnt figure out anything past that though…

also, the relationship of the nodes/views to eachother is kindof odd in some places without being able to clearly see the spatial relationship between them, but i managed to figure them out after a while.

fun game. :) would like to be able to finish it eventually.

thank you for the bug report. i am not certain what might be causing that…especially since the mod works fine if you skip to the next map and then return to the first. i suspect that its a typical portal 2 instability that i’ve dealth with previously though; which is to unsubscribe from all workshop maps and then change a few console variables to ensure the game doesnt redownload them in the background. i dont remember which variables sadly….

I unfortunately haven’t put much consideration into publishing on steam, for a couple reasons.

It costs $100 to publish a stand-alone mod or game on steam, for one.

and my experience with steamworks (the developer backend of steam) on an old game of mine wasnt very pleasant. Valve should really concider redesigning the interfaces for it…..

and when I did somewhat-briefly post some of the maps on steam workshop for portal 2 in an earlier iteration of the mod, the maps had issues due to workshop’s limitations (and more specifically, the hacky workarounds for those limitations.)

there are other reasons too, but these are probably the most important ones.

I hope you can enjoy the mod nonetheless; and I hope this answers your question. :) thank you for your interest in the mod!

Launch Announcement: “Forever Testing: Definitive Edition”

Portal 2 fans, it’s time to dive back into the world of Aperture Science! “Forever Testing: Definitive Edition”, a fan-made mod, is now available. Originally started in 2019, this final version offers enhanced gameplay, remastered voice lines, improved story, and polished visuals. It even includes content from my “Lost Between Floors” campaign, along with a brand-new map for this edition. Ready for more test chambers? Make sure you own Portal 2 and download the mod today to start exploring!

Get it here: Forever Testing: Definitive Edition.

Found a bug in one of the mod’s maps? or a bug somewhere else, like the menu?

Post it here!

I’ve worked for literal years (since the mod’s inception in 2019) ironing them all out, but in that time the maps have gone through a ton of iterations and changes, so there is bound to be some odd behavior I’ve missed in some places.

Q: When will the mod release?

A: It is released! Downlaod it now on the main page.

Q: If this is the “Definitive Edition,” what was the original?

A: The original has a long history going all the way back to 2019. Here’s an old article created around the “probably final update” that marked the end of it’s development. And here’s the igdb page with a link to the download site.

Q: Why Itch.io, and not moddb or gamebanana or some other popular site for Portal 2 mods?

A: Honestly, my experience with certain communities on those larger platforms has not always been positive. To ensure a more comfortable environment, similar to my other portal-related content, I’ve chosen to share it on a smaller platform like itch.io.

Q: Hey, I noticed this mod lacks the cool custom portal gun the original mod had…what happened?

A: Because the maps have their own self-contained stories, I ultimately decided to remove the custom portalgun from the mod; since it implies a continuity that doesn’t exist.

Q: I have a different question…

A: Leave a comment!

somehow this wasnt published until now. huh. fixed it.

(1 edit)

i’ll look into fixing that, thanks for the bug report.

edit: its now fixed

the item usually is dumped off the inventory as far as im aware. are you sure the items arent being removed upon use? (other than the gas bucket, which intentionally turns back into an empty bucket upon use)

also, no, this isnt my first game actually. ive made many before but this is just the first ive published on itch in quite a while.

https://oceanhavenblue.itch.io/stickman-john

Stickman John, a stickman named John, has become stranded in an unknown, desolate place after his Trike-Train breaks down. As the wind blows outside the cave station, he wonders what adventure is in store for him in this mysterious wasteland. It’s up to you to help him find parts to fix it in this short hand-drawn adventure!

As this game was created entirely by one person, me, I would appreciate any feedback or bug reports.

There isn’t much more to say about this game, so, I hope you enjoy this little side-project of mine, and have a nice play through.

If anybody would like to record a playthrough I would love to see it, too!

hello again. hey; i just wanted to apologize real quick that the project kind of just died semi-silently… i did talk about it in discord though if i remember correctly. contact me if you need to be compensated or anything for the work you did and i’ll try to work something out

I have ADHD myself; and this whole thing is 100% accurate lol. very nicely done!

Hello! I am looking for a background artist for a point-and-click adventure game. contact me on discord if your interested: FenFox#3438

yeah, you seem like you are definitely proficient with the type of character art that this project will need! my only question is weather you can animate; like walk cycles and stuff. at the very least though you seem like you’d be able to do the key poses which might still work. if so, i might be interested. :) contact me on discord: FenFox#3438

After briefly looking around your Instagram (i dont have an account so cant scroll very far), I didn’t see examples of characters being animated (actually moving; not just in the sense of having an “animated style”) or any of them being anthropomorphic animals, which are both requirements for this project. If you have any examples of these, though, please reply again with direct links to them. or if you have any examples of backgrounds you could show those too.

that all said, your style is pretty cool, it’s like a somewhat rougher watercolor style.

bump

(1 edit)

bump. still need artists. anybody? listen, i would be more than happy to pay you something more reasonable than “revenue share” but i simply have no way to afford that currently.

Alright, thanks for sharing some examples. I appreciate it.

Unfortunately, from your examples, it doesn’t seem like what I’m looking for; but I appreciate your interest in the project.

(1 edit)

ok, just post them here when your done gathering them (I’ve also edited the above post with the examples i forgot to add previously)

Can you show some examples of your best work? (i meant to include that in the main post but forgot; will add that now)

====About the project====

“A World Unknown” is A point-and-click adventure where choices matter, featuring Blue Fox- an anthropomorphic fox character estranged from his world, trying to find a way home.

Choices you make in the game may impact the story, no matter how seemingly minor- You can choose wisely to ensure the story unfolds a certain way, or choose any way you’d like and see where the story takes you.

Characters you meet will remember your actions, and some of your actions will determine which characters you meet-

Manage collectible items and tools as you explore the missing world and use them to discover new areas and story paths.

This project is a reboot of a previously attempted text adventure game, now a point-and-click adventure similar to “Escape from monkey island”, “foxtail”, and “Broken Age.”

The game takes inspiration from various sources, such as MYST, Portal 2, the tv show LOST, and more.

After a successful short prototype featuring Blue the Fox, years of brainstorming over this game’s plot, and years of experience with several other creative projects, I am confident that this game will be well-loved by many- but only with good art! this is where you come in:

I am looking for talent to make the vision come to life with a cast of unique characters and an equally unique world; where people and places may not always be as they seem.

I am looking for one or more artists to create all the backgrounds for the game which will serve as the playable area. the role of character artist has been filled.

====background artist====

The background artist should be skilled with color theory and perspective, as well as be able to create detailed backgrounds in a variety of natural and man-made settings. the backgrounds will be used as the basis for the game’s world, so should be created in a consistent style and able to work with character art created by the character artist.

You will work with me to bring the game vision to life, based on both concept descriptions and rough sketches produced by me; such as the examples below. additionally, it would be ideal to somewhat mimic my art style based on previous works; but it is ok to use your own style as long as it fits the vision of the game. (which is to say i am open to any artstyle as long as it shows a certain amount of good skill)

====character animator/artist==== UPDATE: This role has been filled

As a character animator and artist, you will need to create animations for multiple characters in a style consistent with the background artist’s backgrounds. You must have a good grasp on character design, and be able to draw especially “Anthro”-style characters (humanlike animal characters). you will need to animate characters, especially the main player character, doing a variety of actions while facing 4 - 8 different directions, such as walking, running, interacting, talking, shrugging, etc.

while the main character has pre-existing art of him to base your animations around, you may also be tasked with designing new characters from scratch for the game based on description alone; for later parts of the game where the main character will meet other characters.

====Payment====

This is a revenue-share project. Everyone working with me on this team will get a percentage cut that we will discuss based on the quality of the work that is done and the role it plays in the final product.

====How To Apply====

please show examples of your best work if you are interested in working for either role. I am looking for skilled artists that can match or exceed my own skillset as shown in these images:

an example of the rough temp art you will be tasked to remake as a background artist: example of my art style which you would ideally replicate:

====my work so far====

I have already made plans for nearly the entire story, with the final 2-3 areas needing to be conceptualized still. the exact details of the story for the first two main areas has been finalized, and needs only for me to adapt it to the new point-and-click format. The game’s code is almost entirely finished; needing only the final level designs to be implemented (which needs art to be done)

I get traceback call errors whenever i try to create any brushes or anything. Please ask for more information if needed, cause this looks like something i'd love to try.

i legitimately started chuckling as soon as I heard of this..this is great. Really funny and unique idea for a game. Haven't bought it yet but that's mainly cause I don't have access to my computer atm

I would but I don't have access to my PC ATM. Though, it turns out that the crashing has nothing to do with this game.

oculus vr kept crashing while playing, but when it was working it was really fun :)

NP. :D

this game is amazing! th art in it is top notch, reminds me alot of OBDUCTION, which runs on UE4. it amazes me that this was all made for a game jam. In regards to the story, the last line in it sums up my feeling about how it ended:

"so...what now....do i just, wait?"

but for the rest of the story, man, i havent fealt this kind of mysterious suspense since watching the TV show LOST for the first time. :D a great feeling i want to replicate in my game somehow.

i love the game's visuals and the little bit of the story i've seen so far; but heres the reason why i havent played all the way through yet:

for one, even though the game is meant to be relaxing, the boat goes too slowly even for that- it felt like i was pressing the boat through really thick mud instead of water.

the other reason, is because there should be a simple pause functionality. I pressed escape to pause, then the main menu loaded. thinking this was a pause screen, i hit escape again to un-pause it, but the game simply closed.

EDIT:

turns out, i wasnt even that far from the end anyways. game is too short. i want more like this. :) also, ever heard of a youtube channel called thehonestguys? they are a meditation channel mostly. i imagined the text being read by them- that said, that would be a great addition to the game, if you could comission them or otherwise get them to narrate the text in the game. :D
