We appreciate your enthusiasm, but there is no rule against this in the jam itself. The EULA simply states you are legally responsible (not Awful Jams) if copyrights holders come knocking.
To clarify, We will not disqualify a game for having copyrighted material. It's not our place to determine what is or isn't infringing. However if your game is DMCA'd, it will be disqualified and we can't do anything to help you.
Thanks!

Hello,

I just wanted to remind everyone of the EULA that one has to agree on before submitting a game for this jam. Specifically it's important to mind the first two points:

  1. You warrant and represent that you are the owner of all intellectual property being uploaded to the Website or that you are authorized to upload any content to the Website and/or have permission from all owners to act on their behalf.
  2. You warrant that you have properly credited all creators of said intellectual property as necessary.

I know that it's tempting with a theme as "unnecessary sequels" to build your game around an already existing game, story, franchise, movie or character. But in most cases even a character is considered copyrighted intellectual property

For instance, using the original "Frankenstein" from May Shelley's book in your game is perfectly fine, as the book is in public domain now.  But using the well-known Universal Pictures variation of "Frankenstein" may raise some issues.

If you have already started developing a game around that idea you should consider making some changes to your game, like using the name "J Station" instead of "Playstation".

And this means as well that you can NOT use logos or any other images (like drawings or scenes from a cartoon) without permission!
