Never thought I'd play a game about shooting Pyrion or Boba, 12/10 yog stars

great game, a possible improvements would be a shop to upgrade/buy new soldiers or traps you can place.

epic game, epic art, potentially a sequel?

Pretty solid entry, well done!

So far the best game in the jam I've played, such a simple game with a compelling story, not to spoil the ending but it was amazing and I don't understand why it happened. The art style was super cute and well drawn. This is a solid entry!

Gameplay idea was unique and interesting, music and aesthetic was great.

So this is the new Dark Souls... the game was amazing, toddy was legendary, only complaint is the controls felt a bit clunky (especially the camera) but I really enjoyed playing this game. Well done!

what an experience... The music was amazing!

The procedural generation was good and the palette change option was nice to see!

Thanks, thats would have been such a good idea!

The concept of the game was super interesting and I could imagine some absolutely insane levels being created, I just wished it was longer. Well done!

Great entry, gameplay was super fun I just wished there were more levels!

Yeah,  I was quite disappointed that I couldn't come up/find a suitable track. Also yeah zooming in would be nice (probably two separate cameras). Thanks for the feedback!

Who doesn't love Jingle cats? I was suprised at how interesting some levels were given how basic the game object concepts were, the only thing was that the quit button didn't work.

Cool idea!, reminds me of cheap golf, I probably would have played like 30 more levels if possible.

Pretty good art style, its pretty cool that you could play this with two people as well. The jumping felt a bit off but otherwise, well done!

omg wow how did you have the time to make this, This is a game I could see myself playing for a long time. Well done!

Production value of this game is amazing, the level design was great and I didn't expect the factory which was amazing. The children were super creepy too! Only issue was I felt it difficult to pick up presents and to hold onto them, otherwise the gameplay was good.

Thanks! The Lewis looks a bit weird though lol

Thanks for the kind words!

Art style is amazing, gameplay was surprisingly chaotic and I genuinely felt your struggle to tame your dog.

But the best thing about this game is the sound design 10/10.

a high score system would be a great improvement

It was weird and I loved it!, not sure about the theme being opposites. Also the player moved too slow but hey, it was fun and I could play more levels.

Graphics were quite amazing for a one week jam well done! I liked the overall theme and the concept is good, perhaps a tutorial in game would be nice, but otherwise really good submission.

Thanks! the 32x32 grid is large, but I tend to find the larger levels are easier to complete since things aren't as densely packed.

The generator is good, and I thought it was full proof, but someone commented they got a level with a blocked exit so it seems to be 99.9% competent.

interesting art style, I really liked the music choice coupled with the design.

Perhaps another level or two would be good, also you can complete the entire game crawling, so it would have been good to come up with scenarios where you are forced to stand. Otherwise, good submission!

Pretty cool game, the music choice was good!

my only criticism is that the movement felt a bit clunky and  could be improved upon.

Pretty cool game! The puzzles were unique and fun to solve

Thanks!

I'm glad you like the graphics since I'm terrible at pixel art!

Thanks!

Thanks!

Thanks for the feedback,

Its interesting you got a unplayablr level!, May I ask, what was blocking the door? A wall or one of the traps? I'm intereted in knowing what part of my code could be breaking.

So this is going the last update of the game as i have got what I wanted for this project and am moving on to a new project.

Updates:

  • minor bug fixes
  • music added
  • credits added
  • better player preferences
  • optimised level sizes
  • level decoration to improve aesthetics

I've uploaded the first ever release as a online game to play in browser so you can try that version out (spoilers it runs pretty bad lol).

Any Questions about anything don't hesitate to ask.

Hey, 0.12 version released of RetroCube, changes to the game are:

  • new Shield power-up added
  • new enemy added, the drone.
  • added a high score table to display the top 3 scores.
  • multiple bug fixes

Now  i am going to try and add more level decoration, arches and different level sizes.

The 0.11 update is minor but changes the game-play significantly by increasing drop rates, improving weapons and increasing enemy damage. All changes are:

  • options menu for camera height and mouse speed.
  • title of the game now on the menu!
  • bug fixed where the enemy counter goes to 0 if too many nukes are collected.
  • nukes now have cool downs i.e the effect doesn't work if you try to stack nuke effects.
  • bug fixed where flamethrower still remains active on reload.
  • increased flamethrower particle speed and damage.
  • loot system changed, now all enemies drop all types  of power-ups.
  • drop rates flat out increased for added action.
  • enemy runner(green) melee damage increased from 4 to 6 with the cool down being 1 second.
  • enemy gunner(dark blue) damage doubles to 2.
  • heavy enemy gunner(red) damage increased from 2 to 3 (its actually fairly significant!).
  • player health capped to 100.
  • fixed wave spawner system to prevent negative amounts of enemies in the maps (maybe).

The next update will include a highscore table for sure, more options if needed and a new enemy type (maybe).

Enjoy!

Retro Cube initially was a game that was designed to be a test for a larger game which never happened. It was used to design a versatile weapon system, firearms in particular. Each weapon has its own code which inherits properties from an abstract class. The class itself has properties such as fire rate, reload, ammo count etc. which all guns should have as baseline properties.  Thus making weapons became more simple since the actual weapon script only contains behavior for when the fire button is called, with the rest being handled by the abstract class.

On top of this other game play features were tested such as a flexible loot system and many more. Once I created most of the code for the raw game I realized that this could become something quite enjoyable if i implemented the content correctly. Making a long open world or story based game would be too time consuming and may not appeal to all audiences hence, I decided to make a small arcade like shooter which you could get the grip of easily and get into quickly.

The choice of graphics was inspired from the word "arcade" and I thought that the look of a 3d voxel world would be aesthetic. In addition, The choice of graphics suits my skills as a game designer as I am the only person developing this game and my strengths are definitely in coding, not modelling or texture design.

This game which remains a test-bed for code which could prove useful in the future is now a playable game which i hope people find enjoyable. If you want more insight into the development of RetroCube feel free to ask and comment and if you have some time, check the game out!

Hi, When updates are made for the game and are uploaded, I will post a topic. Current plans are the following:

  • more level sizes
  • 1 or 2 more enemy types
  • more power-ups
  • more weapons
  • high score table
  • options/description menu
  • music
  • more level design
  • Boss battle mode (later on in development)

If anybody suggests other features to add or bugs to report please do so and I will add to this list. When tasks are completed the item will be crossed from the list as well.

Hello, I have been making a game as a hobby for a while now and after having some free time, am able to release something that might be worth playing. In short, its a top down shooter with some retro themes with some simple but expandable game play.

thanks for the reply! For a 2d physics game I actually found making this game quite simple to make in Unity because the physics engine handles everything so little to no coding is required so definitely give it a try.

Hi guys i just made this quick game to see what it was like to make a 2d game on unity check it out and if there is any criticism don't hesitate to tell me as this is in its very early stages.
