yeah man, there’s a new update launching in a week or so with improved graphics, a Link’s Awakening style HUD and reloading mechanic. After that, I’m starting on Truth and Reconciliation!

thanks for the feedback. It’s always appreciated. Do you think simply faster movement would be better? I haven’t played daikatana

You can easily make one! I did, but I'm not selling them.

It is one! The downloads are right above the comments section. It's completely free.

Does this work for top-down 2D games?

Sweet my Discord is SofaSwordsman#5216 if you want to DM me there. The music in my game is the only thing I haven't made myself so I could really use some help! The main theme playing on repeat does get a little old...

Thank you so much for this complement, Spartan.

What are you trying to contribute? My only real deficit is sound. I have crunched a lot of the .wav files from the actual game, but the plasma weapons don't sound great. I'd also like more varied music. Other than that, playtesting would be nice, too!

That is kind of awesome, but I have fixed it in a big update that's coming out soon.

Thank you for your amazing comment! It means a lot to me! For the grunt birthday party, I actually had that in the game with the confetti and everything, but ended up cutting it because it was taking up too many tiles. That one death sound was accidentally left in :) Maybe I'll be able to add back the full effect some day.

Either here or on the GB Studio discord channel are the best places!

That is a great compliment! Thanks for playing :)

Thanks for playing!

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it.

Thanks for playing! I did want to add a melee, and it would be easy to implement, but there just aren't enough buttons. The Game Boy Color doesn't have trigger buttons, so I can't map to those. Additionally, while each mechanic is easy to implement in a vacuum, its adding everything together cumulatively that can have an impact on performance. I had to think critically about which mechanics to cut in order to preserve smooth gameplay within the limits of the GBC.

You have to click on the emulator player for the key bindings to work. IDK why, but it's like that for all games on Itch that you can play in the browser.

I'm not sure what you're up against with the downloaded file though. I just downloaded it to test, and it worked fine for me in Sameboy.

I use Sameboy, but I think any reputable emulator should work!

Yep! Just download the .gb rom and play it on your emulator of choice.

Wow, that’s high praise! Thank you so much for playing and enjoying my game. I’m still developing it, that’s for sure. I’m excited for everyone’s favorite level - The Silent Cartographer. I hope you do come back for level 2; I think you’ll really like it. I added Jackals, warthog driving and sniping sections! Plus you can save the three groups of marines … or kill them all like I did with my friends as a kid.

Thanks for letting me know! Which room were you in?

Thanks for letting me know! I'll look into this.

this is super cool! I love the top down perspective and the graphics. I had a lot of fun playing through this and considering your design choices. That’s because I’m developing a similar project for the Game Boy Color. We made a lot of the same sacrifices - a melee, grenades - for a streamlined pistol + AR experience.  My project is a real GBC rom and I even got the warthog working! Check it out and hopefully you have as much fun playing it as I did this.

Thank you so much! I admit, dev is kinda non-existant right now because I just became a father of twins :0 But rest assured, I will continue the project as soon as those pint-size Spartans let me sleep through the night.

Thanks so much for playing and for making this video! It's awesome to see other people play it and learn how to improve. It's not the same when I play it myself since I know all the systems and logic behind the immersion.

Thank you so much friend! I'm glad you liked it.

I appreciate it! Glad you liked it.

Heck yeah, brother. Enjoy it!

Thank you!!

Sorry, it doesn't. It might run, but the palettes will look weird in a lot of places.

Thank you so much! Yep, I'm active on the GB Studio discord. I post on a few of the channels and have a WIP thread for core updates. I'm about 75% done with level 2 and there's plenty to see - warthog, sticky grenades, jackals.

Very kind words! I appreciate it!! Making your systems and assets for others is a fantastic way to teach yourself the engine. Hit up the discord, too. There is no shortage of nice people there who want to help. And feel free to DM me on Reddit or Discord if you want to talk through color mode or anything.

Super cool!! Could you export a .pocket file

Lando this is amazing, man. I want more! Mind posting up a .pocket when you get the chance? Looking forward to updates in the discord.

Thank you for the kind words! You are right, it actually doesn't support DMG and is made to be a GBC title only. I should add a splash screen that informs the player of this when inserted into a DMG

This is really cool! I made it to level 10 or so before I died and had to go back to work. The level-up mechanics are simple enough to understand but engaging to want to keep fighting that next enemy! Based on the comments, it sounds like mechanics change during later stages, so I look forward to playing more later to experience that.

Also llike all the boot-screen-esque scrolling dialogue and art.

This game is crazy good! A great example of taking a simple concept and bringing it to life through flawless execution. It's giving me Wendy's Every Witch Way vibes, and I love that game.

This is really cool! Do you mind if I ask how you did the possum shooting scenes? Are they point-and click-scenes with a cursor? I'd like to do a similar thing with sniping sections in my Halo demake for GBC.
