I do have it figured out (and implemented in a test scene) without an animation, but I wasn't satisfied with the lack of player feedback. Thanks for your inputs!

I tried really hard to add melee. I had it working well with a double-tap of any d-pad direction, but the engine's limit of 5 unique projectiles per scene locked me out of doing that sadly. I may come back to it again and give it another go, but I'd really like to work on the next level and get some new content out there!
BTW, there is a cool update to the first two levels coming in a few days.
Thank you for your amazing comment! It means a lot to me! For the grunt birthday party, I actually had that in the game with the confetti and everything, but ended up cutting it because it was taking up too many tiles. That one death sound was accidentally left in :) Maybe I'll be able to add back the full effect some day.
Thanks for playing! I did want to add a melee, and it would be easy to implement, but there just aren't enough buttons. The Game Boy Color doesn't have trigger buttons, so I can't map to those. Additionally, while each mechanic is easy to implement in a vacuum, its adding everything together cumulatively that can have an impact on performance. I had to think critically about which mechanics to cut in order to preserve smooth gameplay within the limits of the GBC.
Wow, that’s high praise! Thank you so much for playing and enjoying my game. I’m still developing it, that’s for sure. I’m excited for everyone’s favorite level - The Silent Cartographer. I hope you do come back for level 2; I think you’ll really like it. I added Jackals, warthog driving and sniping sections! Plus you can save the three groups of marines … or kill them all like I did with my friends as a kid.
this is super cool! I love the top down perspective and the graphics. I had a lot of fun playing through this and considering your design choices. That’s because I’m developing a similar project for the Game Boy Color. We made a lot of the same sacrifices - a melee, grenades - for a streamlined pistol + AR experience. My project is a real GBC rom and I even got the warthog working! Check it out and hopefully you have as much fun playing it as I did this.
Very kind words! I appreciate it!! Making your systems and assets for others is a fantastic way to teach yourself the engine. Hit up the discord, too. There is no shortage of nice people there who want to help. And feel free to DM me on Reddit or Discord if you want to talk through color mode or anything.
This is really cool! I made it to level 10 or so before I died and had to go back to work. The level-up mechanics are simple enough to understand but engaging to want to keep fighting that next enemy! Based on the comments, it sounds like mechanics change during later stages, so I look forward to playing more later to experience that.
Also llike all the boot-screen-esque scrolling dialogue and art.
