One small thing I noticed is that the "start menu" doesn't close when I click anywhere outside it. Nor does it close when I click to launch one of the apps. A behavior that is ingrained into memory by this point. Might want to change that behavior to make the desktop experience more convincing.

Your animations look amazing!

I specifically avoided the term developer and used "creator" instead because not all games are made by hardcore developers and there are a lot of game engines nowadays that let you get away with knowing just basic scripting which is ideal for artists who just want to get a simple game out. They don't necessarily need to interact with the terminal/command prompt most of the time when using these engines.

Thanks!

I suddenly got this when I opened the itch.io client.

Entering my password didn't do anything. I blurred out the long string of numbers and letters because I didn't know if that was sensitive user-specific value.

The graphics look great and the background music sounds nice too! However, the controls and the overall game feel a bit too slow. And upon seeing the first enemy, my first instinct was to jump on its head which proved to not work. Might want to put a small reminder at the start of the level (like a signboard or something?) to shoot in case others have the instinctive thinking to jump on the enemy heads ala Super Mario.

This is hilarious, great job!

I have to agree that workflow with itch.io is more seamless but I didn't see using GameJolt as that much complicated. You're right, I forgot to mention that itch.io is more catered to a host of different items aside from games whereas GameJolt is purely for games. I'll add that on my list above, thanks!

Glad to help

  • Think of itch.io as a place to host your game for free. They have nice widgets that can embed into your website for an easy "cart checkout" experience. GameJolt is more of a platform similar to Steam. They have trophies (achievements) integration, leaderboards, and user-only and game-wide cloud storage service (think Cloud Saves on Steam, as well as trading in-game items with other players of that game, etc).
  • In itch.io you follow the game's developer. On GameJolt, you follow the game itself.
  • You can rate a game even if you haven't played it in itch.io. On GameJolt, you need to have launched the game one way or another before you can rate it. The difference is that, rating is less prominently displayed on itch.io than on GameJolt. On GameJolt it is directly visible up top, on itch.io, you have to click on an expando link to view it as well as other info like when it was uploaded, the game's tags, etc.
  • In addition to showcasing your videos/screenshots, game pages in itch.io allow you to upload your own background image as well as pick the color scheme and choose from a handful of fonts. It's the same case when it comes to your user page where you showcase your games, you get to customize it up to a certain degree only. GameJolt has a more uniform-looking game page but they've introduced Custom Game Sites & Portfolios which allows you to upload a static website both for your games and for your user page (portfolio) so it allows far more customizability.
  • Both of them have desktop clients to help with keeping your game library on each platform organized and easy to update. However, I found that GameJolt's client has been outdated for some time now. (last update was August 3, 2016) It has a lot of missing quality-of-life features. I asked before and they said an update was coming soon-ish but I guess seeing as there hasn't been an updated still, that it has been moved to the back burner again. However, itch.io's client is pretty much a glorified browser. If you have multiple accounts hooked up to it, you can swap between them and keep your cookies and tabs intact for each account. There's a userscript that adds the ability to open game pages on the client kinda like how Steam does. It makes it easier instead of having to copy+paste the URL from the browser to the client. GameJolt doesn't have this leisure as far as I know. You have to search for the game manually on the client. The itch.io client allows a supposedly safer sandboxed environment so even if you download a malware pretending to be a game, the damage would be minimal. GameJolt client doesn't have this but then again, so Steam doesn't either AFAIK.
  • It's easy to set up a merchant account on itch.io, you just provide your PayPal and that's it. On GameJolt, I'm not sure but if you live outside the supported countries, you have to fill out a Google Form and wait in line while they go through it and approve/decline them manually (which takes a long time if what I see on complaints are true). They only support like 2 Asian countries so if you live in Asia, get ready to wait if you want to sell your games.
  • In monetization, both itch.io and GameJolt lets you set a baseline price for your games and people have the option of paying more if they think you deserve more. GameJolt also has the option of sharing ad revenue as another monetization method while itch.io doesn't have that.
  • You can use Bitcoin, Credit Card, and PayPal to make purchases on itch.io, on GameJolt, you can only use Credit Card and PayPal.
  • Design-wise, I honestly prefer GameJolt's look more as it looks more polished and clean whereas itch.io's look more basic. But that's just me I guess.
  • Added by yaru, GameJolt focuses only on games whereas itch.io caters to not just games but other things too like game assets, tools, eBooks, and the like.

These are the things I observed using both platforms.

Yeah that would be a lot less intrusive. Maybe show this modal when the lock icon gets clicked on the address bar.

The example below is on Twitch, there are some other sites too but I can't remember them off the top of my head right now.

These errors don't happen when I visit the websites on regular browsers.

I don't think it's that big a deal when the update fails and the installer has to be re-downloaded. But I read on the itchSetup repo that it's going to have some of the technology behind butler (I assume smaller diffed patches) then all the more power to you! Keep making itch.io awesome

I don't think there's much info here but here you go.

For what it's worth, I remember distinctly that the itch.io installation folder had 2 subfolders in it. app-23.4.0 and app-23.4.1. After I installed app-23.4.2 manually as above, both the old folders are gone now. As well as the Windows 10 custom tile icon that I have for itch.io.

I just got a notification for an update to the itch.io client but when I click on "Download Now" it opens it on the system's default browser.

Is this intended behavior? I could've sworn, updates before were done in-app within the client itself before.

I'm using a Logitech F310 gamepad that has a switch at the back that lets you toggle between DInput and XInput modes for different game support. Weirdly enough, it now works but I don't know if it's because I already made progress on the levels. I tried starting a new game and it still works so I guess all's well? 😆

I was going to reply on my phone but itch.io's comment editor started spazzing out and singing He-Man on me when I tried to backspace.

And yeah I agree it needs to be on the front-end too as some creators are averse to using command line utilities.

Hi, it says it supports any gamepad but it doesn't work with DirectInput ones, only the Xbox 360 controller works.

What game are you trying to download?

Most of the time, when I download a game via the itch.io app, the versioning looks like this

Which isn't really that informative but whatever, I guess that's how itch does it. But when I tried pushing my own project using butler, I realized you can actually specify it properly like this.

Which is a lot more pleasing to look at imo. Basically, I just wish more developers configure their projects this way instead of relying on the cryptic sets of numbers that gets auto generated.

Yeah I understand. Out of curiosity where does it save the redists in Windows? When I was trying to get it to work, it always kept re-downloading them. Are there plans to make it cache the redists instead? To avoid unnecessary bandwidth usage? (Yeah I know few MBs, but there are people with heavily capped internet so all the savings is always better.)

Not sure if you meant Visual Studio as in the IDE itself or the redistributables but either way, I seem to have both installed.

Here's the log (wall of text incoming, sorry!)

That's basically what I meant, a kind of kitchen sink app that showcases what the APIs can do as implemented in an example. However, the sample app gets an error after it downloads the required VCRedist. I tried both with sandbox on and off.

I want to see some examples of games that followed the itch.io App Manifest guidelines found here. Does anybody know of some of them?

Right now, you can only tell the game's total size after you've started downloading it and it shows up on the Downloads page. The only way to see the sizes is if it has multiple packages but for games with just 1 package, there's no way to tell. Also it would be nice if the Install button would say Install Demo when it's a demo version being downloaded.

IMO the one with the outline looked better.
