Robo Scale is a surprise masterpiece. Its 2D platforming is some of the best and toughest since Super Mario Bros 3, with levels that are as challenging to figure out as they are satisfying to complete. Hidden throughout those levels are a wealth of secrets and collectibles, some of which push the skills it teaches you to the absolute limit, along with enough content to keep you playing for dozens of minutes. But the greatest triumph of Robo Scales is that its best-in-class jumping and thrusting is blended beautifully with an important and interesting style and an incredible soundtrack that make it a genuinely adrenaline-filled game, even when your feet are planted firmly on the ground. That said, the way Robo Scales balances  itself by default is flawless. I cared deeply about the robot’s struggle and empathized with it in a way I wasn’t expecting. That emotional struggle ties beautifully into some of Robo Scale’s better platforming sequences as well, occasionally pushing the pace of the level into a frantic rush that made my heart race along with the robot - that speed and emotion being stoked by the soundtrack behind it.
