Potions, Scrolls, and Hell Feedback

Recently I uploaded a demo of a game I am developing, a roguelike Potions, Scrolls, and Hell. I would really appreciate it if someone could play the demo and give me feedback for developing the full version.

What I need is feedback on:

  • Gameplay
  • Difficulty
  • Controls

The game is available for free here.

My feedback is:

I’m not going to include any instructions, as I think part of the fun of this game is figuring it all out for yourself.

This is true to an extent, discovering game mechanics can be very rewarding and is a common element in Roguelikes. However, there’s nothing fun about not knowing literally any of the controls going in and having to just mash the keyboard looking for inputs that do stuff.

Okay, I'll post some instructions for controls, what I really don't want to do however is post a lot of information on gameplay, as it is really fun to explore that yourself.

Sounds like a reasonable strategy!

Hi, my name is Cody Skahan and I am an aspiring Games User Experience researcher, which entails running usability reviews of games to identify usability and UX issues that prevent players from experiencing your game the way you expect.

I saw your post looking for playtesters for potions, scrolls, and hell, and wondered if you would be interested in a usability review for it. In this capacity, my review would be focused more on behavioral considerations (how players will interact with various aspects of your game) and less about attitudinal factors (how players will like your game). I can, of course, give my personal opinion, but my official report identifying the top issues I find will focus on these usability problems. I see you are very interested in feedback about gameplay, difficulty, and controls, so I would focus on these topics.

I think your game idea is really interesting, but I am also interested in sharing this as a case study for my portfolio, and perhaps including it on a blog. This might create some extra publicity and interest in your game, so hopefully a positive thing for both of us.

Let me know if you have any questions and if there are any other focus areas or deadlines that I should consider.

Best,

Cody

I would love a usability review! I'm really interested in how players will interact with my game. Feel free to put it on a blog or as a case study in your portfolio, but do what you want, I don't want to ask too much of you. There are no other focus areas of the game, and I don't have any deadlines. Just work your magic!
