Something important missing? let me know!

Hi Daniel, thanks for inviting me to the beta tryout for Spirals! I think this will be a cool plugin.

I just tried it and have a few suggestions that I would personally find useful:

1. The size button isn't a consistent delay, is that on purpose? Maybe it would be good to have a delay time knob that gives a consistent delay and then a "chaos" knob that modulates the delay time inconsistently creating the effect I'm hearing atm (which is very cool, but sometimes a consistent delay could be wanted?). That would give a huge amount of extra control I think.

2. Add sync button for the delay time? Change the name from size to delay time or something more intuitive.

3. For the pitch I would like to have the choice (maybe a switch button next to each pitch knob) between the additive pitch and a constant pitch. What you have now is the additive pitch (with each delay the pitch gets shifted more), and the option I'd like to have would be that if I choose a fifth above for example, that it doesn't keep adding another fifth on top with each delay but stays on the pitch of the first fifth. I hope you understand what I mean. Of course that could be done with a normal delay plugin and a pitch shifter in front, but having it added as an option in your plugin would make it easy for example to select a constant pitch in the first delay and an additive pitch in the second delay.

4. I think the size (delay time) reacts differently (faster) when reverse is activated. Here I would also rather have it stay the same with reverse activated or not.

These are just my personal observations/ideas. And I don't know how much work they would mean. All in all it's still a nice tool so far and I'm looking forward to the finished version!

- Some solo and mute buttons for the streams. (Idk we got the gain knob so I don't think its necessary)

- Understand that there is a windowed buffer but It would be helpful to to see it like in emergence.

- Also just better tempo syncing in general, like in emergence. (I'm sure this is already planned)

- Maybe a knob for forward and reverse delays

- I like the width knob but maybe a pan one for each stream

- Also agree with a lot of what Samuhart is saying. Didn't want to repeat everything he said.

Also thank you for making this. I can already tell this will be one of my favorite plugins ever. I don't know if it already on your to do list or it was my idea from the emergence form to make this, but seriously thank you. If you ever just want to talk about music production, plugins or anything then hit me up on discord. (Trac3r#8721)

Hi Daniel, thanks for this very interesting surprise machine. I think it sounds great and i could very easily get musical results out of it that still sounded pretty out there :) Also getting it running was super straight forward and no crashes or bugs for me yet.

For features, things I would love are:

  • Set Delay times to time synced intervals (classic, but it saves me the time of running a bpm-time calculator)
  • Save current state as Preset
  • kill switch if the delay runs out of control and to tame massive tails

Maybe something will speak to you. In the meantime I'll be busy running the current version.

Hi Everyone, thanks for sharing your ideas!

I feel like there is some overlap in the points mentioned, I’ll try to address everything here

Tempo sync: This is fairly straightforward and I plan to add this for predelay and buffer size

Presets: Would be a good addition (for emergence too) especially because the I can ship some factory presets with the plugin to get people started. But I while I still might change features and parameters because that would probably mess up any existing presets.

kill switch: I also thought about this a couple of times while using the plugin so I might want to add this too

Size and delay time: Delay time here does not really work the same way as in regular delay plugins and the knob is labelled as Size for a reason. Predictable delay times are not really possible with the current pitch shifting method so this might not be the right tool for those needs.

Pan Maybe but I want to keep this one on the simple side and not end up with dozens of knobs

Pitch

  1. For the pitch I would like to have the choice (maybe a switch button next to each pitch knob) between the additive pitch and a constant pitch. What you have now is the additive pitch (with each delay the pitch gets shifted more), and the option I’d like to have would be that if I choose a fifth above for example, that it doesn’t keep adding another fifth on top with each delay but stays on the pitch of the first fifth. I hope you understand what I mean. Of course that could be done with a normal delay plugin and a pitch shifter in front, but having it added as an option in your plugin would make it easy for example to select a constant pitch in the first delay and an additive pitch in the second delay.

I get the idea but this sounds like a lot of work for something that can already be done with existing tools or maybe even in this plugin to some degree. I think you can get something similar by setting up one delay line a pitch shifter (Feedback=0, Crossfeed=0, Width<0.5) and the other as delay with feedback and Crossfeed from the pitch shifter delay.

Thanks for your answer! Understandable and it makes sense to me!

Would love to have a keyboard shortcut to round pitch intervals. Having a scale to work with would be very interesting too.
Also - tooltips for noobs would be great! I'm not an audio person and I have absolutely no idea what a lot of the settings actually mean, even with the descriptions.

Pitch shifting is relative to the pitch of the source material so I’m not sure how the scale thing would work in this plugin. For specific pitch intervals you can click the label under the knob and enter any value you want

I know that some of the help descriptions are not very helpful at the moment and I plan on adding more detail before the next release. If you have questions about any of the parameters feel free to ask and I’ll try to clarify those

First of all, thank you for these amazing sound tools! I'm a sucker for Prime Time/Ursa Major style digital delays so this is such a treat. For sound design it'd be great if you could control the two delays at the same time but with a lock for relative values e.g., moving the crossfeed but maintaining their relationship as in this screen shot. Does that make any sense?  Thanks Johan

Hey Johan
I think I get the idea but two parameters changing each other (with an added offset) might not be easy to get exactly right. I’m not sure if something like this would play nicely with automation and presets and other details.

On the other hand macro parameters (as seen in the emergence modulation system) would allow changing multiple parameters with one knob in a very flexible way (any number of parameters changed by different amounts if needed). Is this close to what you are asking for? let me know what you think

Hi Daniel

Yea that'd work great. It'd be useful for automation sure but the reason I want it is that I often print different variations of sounds and tweak the modulation manually each time. I can use the macro controller in Reaper to set this up but having a macro like on Emergence would be much quicker! Thanks!
