How strict are the requirements?

Hey there! I just wanted to ask if its necessary to work with ASCII Graphics and Turn-based mechanics, or if a more loose rogue-lite etc. approach is welcome too. Thanks!

ASCII graphics are not required at all. Turn-based mechanics are preferred to keep up with the traditional roguelike gameplay, but are not required either.

There are many interpretations of what a roguelike is which may serve as a guide. However, 7DRLs may bend or even break these interpretations in the name of Innovation.

would it to be fair to say that a roguelite would be an acceptable submission to this jam?

it would be an acceptable submission. This year we want to highlight the importance of the procedural content generation facet, so just make sure you keep that in mind :)

Does it mean that a meta-progression is ok too?

yes. Just state that in your game description.
