Advice regarding finding projects as a Sound Designer, Composer

Not sure that this is the right place to ask but I figured I should try, worst case I'll just delete the post
A couple days ago I got fired from my job as an music editor (high tech layoffs) and I do want to stay positive and continue working as a musician, especially in the gaming world, I really love the idea of working on games.
I also found a few projects that I am working on so that's cool, most of them a pro bono though which is fine by me since I love helping out and be a part of a project but I wanted to ask about the future, is there a place, server, website (that maybe I don't know about) that it'll be easier for me to get more projects to work on in the future? I have quite the exp since I've worked as a musician with Artlist and Simply, and also on a few games before, but I feel it'll be a bit harder to find in the next following months. Let me know your thoughts if you can, and sorry if post is not related to the help forum.

freelance work, that is what you should be doing. find a rate that balance expencs and profit

Yeah I am looking for freelance work, but even if I have quite the portfolio it seems pretty hard to find the right platforms to get some work

Apart from posting in Help Wanted or Offered and mentioning [paid] in the tile, I'm not sure what to suggest.

I did :) I thought maybe people know other platforms. I also wanted to upload some sounds here but for some reason itch does not validate my tax info for quite some time

I'd be interested in getting a look at your portfolio - do you have a site with some of your work available to browse? I'm a retired musician myself that moved into (with a stop-off in copywriting) writing/producing VNs, so I appreciate what goes in to a good soundtrack, and royalty-free options are... lacking.

Yes for sure! You can add me on Discrod and I can talk more about it - OfficialGruber#8320
Or you can check my portfolio which is work in progress :) - https://officialgruber.wixsite.com/gruber
Will buy a domain soon. Should mention that I am working with Artlist.io also from time to time which is cool.

Alright I'll try to make sure to sign on to Discord later and add you!

No problem! I am also available on other platform if that's more convenient! LinkedIn, Email, Instagram, Facebook :P, but the best one is Discrod. Let me know !

You could try the "knock on doors" approach... find games that are in development that you would like to work on, and send them a message asking if they need a composer. You'll have to send a lot of emails and most of the responses will be "already have one" or "can't afford one." But it's a nice active way to put your name out there, and reach people who might never have stumbled on your portfolio or help offered post. Look for games in the "sweet spot" of development - if it's too early in the process, they might not be ready to hire you and will forget by the time they are. Too late, and they probably already decided on music. So its best to find games that close to or just entering the "polish" phase, when the developers have a solid foundation and a good idea of what music they will need.

Thanks a lot for the advice. I did actually that and got the exact responses you said! I did end up getting some gigs. I feel like I have a nice Resume and am willing to work a lot for free and it's still really hard to find someone who's willing to do this as work. Do you have a place where i should ask beside reddit?

Anywhere people post about games in development, especially if you can sort by status. On indie.db you can browse games that are unreleased, coming soon, or early access which helps narrow down the list right away. The Itch browser doesn't seem to have that but you can look at "most recent" or poke around the Devlogs, General Development, and Feedback sections of the forum. Make sure to check for signs that they already have music, although that doesn't always mean they wouldn't hire you to replace free assets or to add to what they already have.

Thanks a lot for you words and advice, I will try doing that. I really appreciate it since I feel like I have a lot to offer music and sound design wise and I don't take your help for granted, not a lot of people would have put time to try and help like that. Thanks again :D

Sorry this is off topic from what you two are talking about, but also not - I'm having trouble with Discord, but I got to listen to some samples you had on artist.io and I think I'd like to work with you :-) I also don't expect you to work for free, you're far too good for that!

You'd mentioned being able to use FB to contact me, would you be able to send me a message through FB messenger? Just look up ERODH C and C Visual Novels, it's a public page.

Yes ofc! Thanks for your kind words, I truly appreciate it. Will contact you :D
