What is Touhou Kourinden ~ Mythos of Phantasmagoria?
Touhou Kourinden ~ Mythos of Phantasmagoria is a story-driven, beginner-friendly danmaku RPG that follows the life of Rinnosuke Morichika (called Kourin in-game) as he grows from a child to an adult. The game will be broken up into six acts, with the first entire act free for anyone to download, play, and share.
Mythos of Phantasmagoria's gameplay is inspired by the likes of Pokémon, Final Fantasy, and Undertale. The visual aspects are inspired by Sierra's Adventure Game Interpreter engine. Its soundtrack not only consists of original songs but remixed tunes from Touhou Project and Chuhou Joutai are also in the mix. The soundtrack was written in OpenMPT using the OPL2 functionality, featuring a score with FM synths incomparable to other games.
Even though the game in its entirety is complete, we still have another whole year before it releases. The game won't probably launch on Steam until next spring. That said, we're wanting to get this game to Whitethorn Digital, and we're in the process of trying to obtain the Touhou Project rights to publish this game on the Nintendo Switch.
Can you explain the backstory behind its development?
Development of the game began last summer shortly after Chuhou Joutai 3: Three Nights of Scarlet Abscess, which released last autumn, wrapped up development. After spending two and a half years porting the PC-98 Touhou Project games to Windows in the form of the NES Demakes, we were ready to create an original Touhou Project fangame. Queen Marisa is a royal figure mentioned a number of times in the Chuhou Joutai trilogy. In Mythos of Phantasmagoria, you can see how Marisa's legend unfolds. Fun fact: this game was codenamed Chuhou Joutai Origins during development.
We never developed an RPG before, and this was one heck of a challenge. The game was originally going to be made in RPG Maker, but that engine's limitations made it difficult to achieve what I wanted. As with my previous games, Mythos of Phantasmagoria in its entirety was developed in GameMaker. The reason it took so long was because making an RPG from scratch is difficult, and a lot of time and planning was needed to get it right.
How can I improve the game?
Whitethorn Digital, the game's intended publisher, has a philosophy of accessibility and low stress for the titles they publish. Therefore, we ask for your feedback on how we can make Mythos of Phantasmagoria accessible to as many players as possible. Mythos of Phantasmagoria is intended to soothe players intimidated by the danmaku genre, so we're also asking for your feedback on what elements should be changed in order to lessen the stress on the player.
