Critical Damage

Hi!

I've been in a couple of sessions of this so far, and I like it pretty well! There are some things I can't yet get my head around, like the Shoot Table (what?), although we probably need to keep running those things as-written for a while to see how they settle.

One thing that definitely puzzles me is critical damage. This makes perfect sense for the most part, but a lot of "weird" enemies have a special effect that's triggered on a critical. Does this mean:

  • If you roll to resist and FAIL, you get incapacitated and ALSO the special effect occurs
    • If so, are these separate resistance rolls or just one roll?
  • If you roll to resist and FAIL, you get the critical effect INSTEAD OF the incapacitation
Developer

The critical damage effects happen after you fail a critical damage save.

So if a kulworm bite brings you below 0 Grit, it triggers a critical damage save; if you fail, the kulworm swallows you and you need to make a STR save to escape or take additional damage every round, essentially leading to a death spiral. If you succeed the initial critical damage save, you’re still on your feet and not swallowed.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for replying!

I understand how monster effects kick in on a failed critical save. Thing is, the general effect of failing a critical save is that you're incapacitated. Does the monster effect override that, or are you BOTH incapacitated AND have the monster effect?
