Video dev log length preferences

Hello everyone,

does anyone here have experience with the length of dev log videos? I hesitate to summarize current progress in a 10 minute video or to split the topics into two videos each 5 minutes. Does anyone have experience with whether it is valued more if you show short videos more often or if you show more detailed videos less often?

Do you watch dev log videos? What length do you prefer?

Thanks for any insights.

I prefer watching 3-5 minute devlogs, but it really depends on how much you have to share in that video. I get skeptical when I see Youtube videos over 10 minutes long because at that point it's hard to tell if they truly have 10+ minutes of interesting content, or if they're being needlessly long-winded to increase their watch-times.

well some devs give tips on how they looked/solved at a specific problem and explain, how they solved it. But that is not achievable in 5 minutes.

You're right, which is why I would recommend doing two types of videos -- a shorter one sharing only major updates and longer ones where you can go into the details of problems and game mechanics. By separating your videos like this, you'll also get a good idea of how many people have a "shallow" vs a "deep" interest in your game. The players that are really interested are going to be the ones that watch your in-depth devlogs.
