I tried playing this game directly on browser and it worked. But when I want to download all I get is a file folder with I can't run and on the itch.io desktop app it gives error. Is this a bug or am I just doing someothing stupid

My knowledge about Mac OS is nonexistent, I can't help you much.
I have a fix to the problem. When you are about to launch the game press the settings button on the itch client. There will be an option to install the game differently (Different app/code type) and install that. When you launch the game, you will have to option on which app to use. Use the one that you just installed. I hope this helps you!
