Rocksprout Village, a game where you adventure and help a community grow!

Hi everyone! Slyonics and I are currently working on our second, this time full length, action-adventure RPG. A game which we're so far calling Rocksprout Village. 🌱✨

It's going to be a 2d game with pixel art. Features we're planning include:

  • a highly customizable player character
  • dynamic (procedurally generated/modular) dungeons
  • a friendship system with the villagers
  • a day/night cycle, pets and mounts,
  • tool-based exploration (like in Zelda games)
  • and the ability to help villagers grow, develop and customize their town

    As far as the game design and world design goes, we're up to 7 lengthy design docs and one spreadsheet. The basic outline of the story is simple - mainly adventuring and exploration. We've decided to focus on storytelling on a more macro level, putting more effort into the personal stories the player develops with the individual villagers, getting to know them, making friends and helping them deal with their Cute Animal Problems. The basic outlines of most of their stories are also completed, though I should really get around to writing them down.

    Worldbuilding-wise, we've developed lots of lore and background info (complete with a unique system of four elements you've never heard of before, which may or may not come into play via magic spells). Rocksprout Village also takes place in the same universe as The Last Panderling 2, so some characters from TLP2 will make cameo appearances!

We also have a musician in mind who we'll hopefully be able to commission the music from who has worked with us before on TLP2.

So! I'm the artist and writer, and I'm currently working on mainly two things. :)

First is putting finishing touches on the player character. It's currently an enormous spritesheet featuring 9 body styles, 18 hairstyles, 12 customizable animal body parts and a dog petting animation (in addition to the obvious ones like attacking, running, dodge rolling, flinching...). Here is a little preview of what the player character will look like:


I'm also working on our second villager, a tough no-nonsense lumberjack named Effie whose headstrong idea to live out in the middle of the wilderness gets the entire town started. I'll post some gifs of her as I finish her animations. The first villager I finished is Millie, a cook who's not very confident in her skills when she first moves into the town. I'll be keeping this thread updated with any new villagers, enemies, pets or other assets I manage to complete. Hopefully Slyonics will also be able to post some updates on the programming side of things, he's done loads of amazing work so far.

Some progress for today! Two possible versions of the Snowbird Parental Unit (which one do you think should be in the game?), a basic sprite of Effie with her axe, a possible sketch of the title and a wip of Grandma Wald.


A little update: the player character is nearly finished, it'll take a couple more days to properly figure out layering for the customizable body parts but after that hopefully I can post some examples of what customized player characters might look like in action. Meanwhile, meet the Snowbird Parental Unit, a friendly questgiver from the icy late game area around the 7th dungeon!


Here's a more-or-less finalized version of the title!



The title screen needs some movement on it but I’m still undecided whether to have it floating around like this or try some particle effects instead. The background this’ll be on will probably be a simple pastel landscape of the town.

So the rock has 4 colours on it (pink, turquoise, green, yellow) which roughly correspond to the colours in the gradient. Those colours are actually meaningful, symbolizing the 4 elements in the lore: fey, noise, moss and fate.

Fey stands for trickery and magic, noise for force and technology, moss for wisdom and growth, and fate for inevitability and the fundamental laws of nature. Those elements influence the entire world in Rocksprout Village - in the simplest of ways, such as elemental affinities for enemies, but also more deeply such as what types of strategies are used to beat dungeons that are connected with particular types of elements, and the personalities of people influenced by them.

Phew. so that’s the tea on some of our lore. Next up: finally finishing up player characters complete with customization ʕ→ᴥ←ʔ

The player character is finally done, meanwhile some enemies from the 1st dungeon also showed up!
