The player character is finally done, meanwhile some enemies from the 1st dungeon also showed up!

Here's a more-or-less finalized version of the title!

The title screen needs some movement on it but I’m still undecided whether to have it floating around like this or try some particle effects instead. The background this’ll be on will probably be a simple pastel landscape of the town.

So the rock has 4 colours on it (pink, turquoise, green, yellow) which roughly correspond to the colours in the gradient. Those colours are actually meaningful, symbolizing the 4 elements in the lore: fey, noise, moss and fate.

Fey stands for trickery and magic, noise for force and technology, moss for wisdom and growth, and fate for inevitability and the fundamental laws of nature. Those elements influence the entire world in Rocksprout Village - in the simplest of ways, such as elemental affinities for enemies, but also more deeply such as what types of strategies are used to beat dungeons that are connected with particular types of elements, and the personalities of people influenced by them.

Phew. so that’s the tea on some of our lore. Next up: finally finishing up player characters complete with customization ʕ→ᴥ←ʔ

A little update: the player character is nearly finished, it'll take a couple more days to properly figure out layering for the customizable body parts but after that hopefully I can post some examples of what customized player characters might look like in action. Meanwhile, meet the Snowbird Parental Unit, a friendly questgiver from the icy late game area around the 7th dungeon!

Some progress for today! Two possible versions of the Snowbird Parental Unit (which one do you think should be in the game?), a basic sprite of Effie with her axe, a possible sketch of the title and a wip of Grandma Wald.

Hi everyone! Slyonics and I are currently working on our second, this time full length, action-adventure RPG. A game which we're so far calling Rocksprout Village. 🌱✨

It's going to be a 2d game with pixel art. Features we're planning include:

  • a highly customizable player character
  • dynamic (procedurally generated/modular) dungeons
  • a friendship system with the villagers
  • a day/night cycle, pets and mounts,
  • tool-based exploration (like in Zelda games)
  • and the ability to help villagers grow, develop and customize their town

As far as the game design and world design goes, we're up to 7 lengthy design docs and one spreadsheet. The basic outline of the story is simple - mainly adventuring and exploration. We've decided to focus on storytelling on a more macro level, putting more effort into the personal stories the player develops with the individual villagers, getting to know them, making friends and helping them deal with their Cute Animal Problems. The basic outlines of most of their stories are also completed, though I should really get around to writing them down.

Worldbuilding-wise, we've developed lots of lore and background info (complete with a unique system of four elements you've never heard of before, which may or may not come into play via magic spells). Rocksprout Village also takes place in the same universe as The Last Panderling 2, so some characters from TLP2 will make cameo appearances!

We also have a musician in mind who we'll hopefully be able to commission the music from who has worked with us before on TLP2.

So! I'm the artist and writer, and I'm currently working on mainly two things. :)

First is putting finishing touches on the player character. It's currently an enormous spritesheet featuring 9 body styles, 18 hairstyles, 12 customizable animal body parts and a dog petting animation (in addition to the obvious ones like attacking, running, dodge rolling, flinching...). Here is a little preview of what the player character will look like:

I'm also working on our second villager, a tough no-nonsense lumberjack named Effie whose headstrong idea to live out in the middle of the wilderness gets the entire town started. I'll post some gifs of her as I finish her animations. The first villager I finished is Millie, a cook who's not very confident in her skills when she first moves into the town. Here are some gifs of Millie (ノ^∇^)ノ゚

I'll be keeping this thread updated with any new villagers, enemies, pets or other assets I manage to complete. Hopefully Slyonics will also be able to post some updates on the programming side of things, he's done loads of amazing work so far.

So, this is our thread where we'll keep you all posted on our progress. Feel free to ask or chime in on anything, and thank you so much for your interest in Rocksprout Village!

We hope we can make a fun, captivating game with loads of personality that will charm the pants off of everyone.

Thank you! I can't say I am able to replicate those errors (I've tested exclusively in Firefox from the beginning and never ran into an error dialog), but at least now I know FF is not a given.

Hi hello, today I finished my short interactive story project. It's mostly text-based with a few bits of pixel art and definitely atmospheric/story-focused. Please check it out if you feel like!

I'm looking for information on whether or not it runs alright on different peoples' systems, since various browser/device combinations seem to yield wildly different results (for example it works and looks fine in Chrome on my laptop, but it's a black screen in Chrome on my PC). If anyone feels like chiming in on that or with any other feedback that'd be great please do! Thank you! ( •⌄• ू )✧

While not my type of game, I definitely appreciate the vaporwave-ish aesthetic. I also like how smooth the controls feel overall.

Very nice how the visual style mimics actual Animal Crossing games, and the references to them throughout are amazing (I remember being SO STOKED when some penguin or other wore a t-shirt I made). Like SAGiggs says below, it's a bit of a leap from "everyone fucking hated the mayor for a good reason" to "____ did it", maybe instead have an option to guess "you all did it"? Either way, the references and humour are all spot on.

It looks and plays amazing. Love the (Yoshi's Island inspired?) "sketchy" visual style, love how GOSH DANG CUTE everything is (even the enemies!!!!), the sound design is great and def enhances the experience. A thing of beauty for sure.

LEARNED SO MUCH ABOUT BIRDS AW YEAH. Love how the educational content never stops, not even when you're "done" and finally getting a photo of your chosen bird, but also doesn't ever feel annoying or out of place. Actually there's a LOT to love about this game, for me the biggest thing is how skillfully you transformed Dating Sim mechanics to be about hanging out with ridiculously sexy birds instead of creeping on schoolgirls or what have you. The vaguely gross beating heart to represent heartrate was my second fave.

I love how the audio is filtered to directly reference voiced lines in old timey fighting games. I think there's a very minor balance issue where Bug is by far the least playable character - he's a bit more frustrating and less fun than, say, typing PEEPEEPOOPOO. Overall an incredibly fun idea that makes me wish it was a full fledged fighting game with a full roster of ~20 characters because all in all arbitrary key combos are no better than typing out "shart", and you could get incredibly creative with the different swears.

Just incredibly fun overall. The voiced lines were great and I love how satisfying the shooty-shoot is.

It's weird in the best way and it's cute. I love how different the art style is. Only flaw I can think of is that I find myself wanting to go a little faster, a sprint or dash might be a nice addition.

I love the sleek, polished graphics style and the beautifully coherent palette. Great idea to show off the main approach to puzzle solving via easy to follow instructions early on (the pie baking). Sadly I'm a motion sickness scrub and tend to get dizzy from the teeny tiny FOV unless playing in very short bursts, but I hope I'll be able to finish eventually.

Combining two beautiful, perfect things into one even more beautiful and perfecter. I LOVE this game.

I also had a bit of trouble keeping the pets happy, they usually just gradually die of sadness despite being fed, praised and cleaned up. Spamming praise seems to make the happiness drop even faster? In any case, I really like the character design and how it's the perfect mix of cute and unsettling (THE LEGS), the music and sound effects are great too.

First off, this game's take on the theme is BRILLIANT. I am floored at this amazing yet simple concept of a look at the original game and its various sequels throughout the years, sometimes adding silly and unnecesarry features but ultimately being exactly the same (and then changing completely and getting incredibly pretentious right at the end). 90 000 kickstarter backers was hilarious, as were the various made-up britishisms sprinkled throughout, and Clive's whole (flawlessly voice acted) speech.

Thank you! SDV is one of my faves and definitely a huge inspiration for the visual style :D

Hello all, a bit update today because our game's finally finished! Please check it out if you'd like!

Progress update! Only 3 days to go! We're getting things done at a steady pace. Everything’s programmed in but the shop, everything’s arted but the ending slides. We also got a batch of great sound effects from one of our lovely musician contributors today. Also fixing some bugs and transparency oddities, figuring out how it looks at different screen resolutons… it's going great :D

June 31st update: It's finally finished! Please check it out here if you'd like!

Hi all, I'm a part of a 2-person team (with Slyonics) working on a game for the Awful Summer Jam 2018! 🐼💚✨

Our game is called The Last Panderling 2, it is a short 2d zelda-style action/adventure and a sequel to the (fictional) The Last Panderling. It has co-op gameplay, pixel graphics (sometimes with shaders), great music and even some type of a story!

It's built using Monogame, we used Tiled for maps, and a few super nice musicians from the Awful Jams Discord channel contributed music. We're currently close to done, with 4 days left in the jam all required assets are finished and a few optional ones in progress (more enemies, more NPCs, more pickups...) and Slyonics is still working on implementing the final bits of story and gameplay.

I'll also try to post some shots of the process and WIPs on my end (art, map design and writing). °˖✧◝(⁰▿⁰)◜✧˖°
